Hey All, I'm new here and already need help. I've got a 1999 TH Executive, and I got a sound system for Christmas (because the crappy standard stereo had no CD player and very few working functions) and when I tried to install my new sound system, I disconnected the battery so I didn't wreck anything.......and subsequently wrecked everything. Once the new unit was hooked-up I reconnected everything and the car wouldn't Idle. after resetting the trip-computer and checking every fuse in the car, I figured that maybe the old stereo had some kind of security device in it (hence the flashing red light) so I reconnected it instead, and the car seemed to idle fine when it was stationary. I fitted everything back together with the old stereo and decided I'd get the new one fitted by a qualified, "fully-sick, doof-doof, Pump up the bass" stereo man. Except once the car was all back together, the trip computer set for 3.0 litre sedan, the back-seat full of empty beers I was drinking during the attempted install, etc, the car started but stalled at every set of lights and intersection I stopped at. When you start it the orange "Check Engine" light stays on til you rev the car, then it either stalls or idles rough til you drive it then stop somewhere....then it stalls. I took the advice of the "all-knowing light" and checked my engine......it was still there, right under the bonnet where I left it, so I'm all out of ideas. Has anyone got some really cool ideas (read: ideas that will stop it doing that whole annoying stall, start, stall, start, stall, start thing?) that I can try before Mitsubishi open again on Wednesday? HEEEEEEEEEELP! Thanks, Mr Wooha!
Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, then reconnect and push the accelerator to the floor (without turning it over). then take off the foot from the accelerator and start the car normally let it run for 15 minutes, after that (if it is auto) go throught the gears (with the brake on) to make the computer "remember" the settings. then go for a drive.
fingers crossed it will work. if it doesnt other ppl might have ideas or wednesday it looks like it is back to the mitsu dealer.

Why is it whenever the 'engine light' turns on, everyone seems to get all scared and end up clearing the memory?
Seriously, that engine light has got to be the best thing ever made for a car ever since EFI was invented. It tells you exactly what has gone wrong so that you don't have to muck about trying to work out what went wrong.
I suggest you follow the following steps. It's quite easy. Just don't get Pin 1 mixed up (ie. if you're using a mirror, don't forget to reverse the diagram as well!)

Oh and your 'special tool' is just a piece of wire. Insert the wire into Pin 1, then have the other end going to an earth point, ie. any metal bit of the chassis will do.

Being a TH, are you sure it's a 3.0 litre and not a 3.5? :)
It doesn't matter. Happens to me every time i disconnect the battery to do my stereo. It is definately annoying and rather dangerous when u drive around. whenever u slow down below 40, the revs just faceplant into the stopper and the engine stalls. U lose steering and that usually scares u. It will also stall when u turn the air-con on too, seems like the car doesn't know how to idle or change gears properly. when it happens the car disenganges the gear and revs up for about half a second, then enganges the next gear. weird.
anyways, just turn the car on and leave it idling for about 20 mins. u can shift thru diff gears 1,2,3...R....after a while it should be all ok. By the time u can turn the air-con on without putting your foot down to stop it stalling, it should be all good.

The way I understand it is when you disconnect the battery for any length of time the computer resets and needs to learn how to drive again. Let it idle for a while then drive around slowly for a while and it should learn again when to change gears and how to idle properly. Its normal for it to do that.
If you want (and its an auto) you can hammer it for a few days and it should hold the gears longer when you drive around :) (cos it adapts to your driving style)

Hey, You learn something new everyday. Yep, apparently my Magna forgot how to work. Since running is the main function of the engine, you'd think Mitsubishi woulda made that the one function it didn't "forget", yet after some idling, driving and lots of swearing, the car is once again running as it should. ~Thanks for your help Eek, H45E, Candarin and Phil (Teco - will keep your info for future reference, I'm sure I'll do something dumb to break it in future, Thanks) Thank You Linesmen, Thank You Ball-Boys, Wooha! :D :) lol
