I am surprised at how much the 3rd gen magnas actually weigh, the auto sedan is quoted as a kerb weight of 1444 kg and the wagon 1533 kg which seems quite heavy considering their size which suggests they have a strong rigid body and chassis, but are these weights 'dry' weights (no fuel and no person on board) I think that's what 'kerb weight' means, are these weights acurate as they do sound heavy for a medium sized car maybe Mitsubishi use a different formula to other car makers?

"medium sized car" - try the tape measure! Both the Magna and the Camry are larger than most other medium sized cars (Vectras, Ford Focus, Mazda 6 etc) so in effect they're smallish large cars - which explains why they weigh nearly as much as a Commodore or a Falcon.
The equipment level is the other factor - the absolute base Commodore Executive is 4876mm long and 1842mm wide and 1440mm high for a weight of 1568kg as an auto. The base Magna ES is 4860mm long (just 1.6 cm shorter than a Commodore) and 1785mm wide and 1435mm high so its not much smaller than the Holden, but weighs in at 1537Kg as an auto in current TL ES form. The difference is that the base ES is much better equipped than the Comodore Exec.

I actually thought magna's are pretty light cars for their size. Look at the commodore and falcon. The verada is actually longer than both those cars thanks to the chunky bumpers but the magna falls only just short. Commodores and Falcons are more imposing cars due to their width they are much more wider than the magna\veradas!

A Magna 3rd gen exec auto weighs more than one of the older 2nd gen commodores (VS) equivalent, the auto exec VS 1995\96 V6 commodore sedan weighs 1390kg and I think the TE\TF\TH etc exec sedans weigh 1440kg, the commodore must be made out of thin tin, I sure would not like to have a crash in one, I've heard that they break in 2 when in a serious crash.

Yeah I know what you mean, the VT\VX etc commodores are too heavy (I own one) they are also over geared for the engine capacity in relation to their weight to keep good fuel economy, Holden stuffed up the weight and made them too heavy, the Ford BA is about 100 kg heavier again and has fuel consumption around the 17L\100km if driven hard but boy do they go hard, the 3rd gen Magnas are quite light compared to these cars.

lighter... but i wouldnt go so far as to say they are significantly lighter than commos and falcs... i mean they are still nearly 1.5tons!
that brings me to the point about our brakes... at 274mm up front they are tiny!! compared to the standard commo brakes :doubt:

Yes I've noticed in the road test reviews between Commodore, Falcon, Camry and Magna that both the Camry and the Magna take several more metres to stop in a panic brake from 100km-0. 274mm is a bit small for the front. Yes they are lighter than VT commodore onwards but about 100 kg heavier than pre VT commodores (VS Sedan auto V6 1390kg)

I think any car really would split into 2 in a very serious crash. Look at the couple of late model Skylines that crashed recently in NSW!

Yes trees are solid and cars are hollow and at 180 kph? What I meant was that if you had the same crash in a 3rd gen Magna or a VT onwards Commodore you'd have a better chance of surviving than in a pre VT commodore (VN-VS) due to their light weight etc. :)
