Hey guys, since i bought myself a amp and sub ////ALPINE ive spent the last few days making a box to hold that sub and i would like some suggestins and comments on my ideas i have to do to the box im making.
First i would like to make the back of my box perspex to when u open ski port u can see the sub. (Is perspex reasonable to use or stick with MDF aslo anyone know cost and thickness i should use).
Second i would like to paint the inside white and put either a blue neon or a blacklightinside the box at the bottom.
Also im gonna be putting on vinyl on the box so it dosent stand out too much in the boot.
And i need a place to mount the amp, though cables arent exactly very long limiting me to the area near the back of the boot near the ski port (any ideas on mounting)
Some pics of box nearly finished.

Ok, as for the clear window, unless u get some thick assed perspex its really not worth doing. My suggestion is to look in your yellow pages to find someone that will cut out a bit of glass for you, smooth out the edges and possibly drill some holes (if you need). Oh, get them to etch something in, like an alpine logo would be nifty too :P .Glass, i believe is slightly cheaper than perspex for the amount of strength you want. Though it might be a little heavier and prone to shattering (rare situations), its price and strength outweigh perspex. Oh, it doesn't scratch as easily, so you can rest easy that the backseat passengers won't do anything to the window.
For painting the inside of your box...go ahead, its just that you have to make sure everything looks nice a shmick. I put bracing in my boxes, and the insides of my boxes aren't the best looking either :P
Some white paints don't lite up the way they're supposed to with UV tubes, but by all means, go ahead.
Lastly, for mounting your amp, there are lots of options. You can screw it into the floor(with a piece of wood of course) screw it on the bottom of the parcel shelf, screw it into the backreast, side of the wheel arch, or side of the sub box. Use your creativity. :P
EDIT: I've never worked with vinyl (is it vinyl or vynil?) but apparently surface prep is very important as well as a heat source e.g 20 dollar heat gun from office works. Carpet is better, it stands out LESS than vinyl/vynil would

Perspex is fine, if it's too expensive also consider glass. You could make a false floor or hidden wall for your amps. I doubt you could mount them to ur sub box looking at the size/shape.
If you're going for a stealthy install I'd go a hidden wall on either left or right behind the tail lights. Give it an inch or two to breathe and you can install some 12v pc fans to aid with cooling if you have any overheating problems.
edit: Eek it's vinyl ;) And correct you need good surface prep, but on mdf it shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Make sure you don't mount your amp upside down though... Duh... ;)
Peace
Tim
I could be rather picky and tell you to fix up the two edges on the face where you've cut the circle. See one edge is sticking out and one edge is going on? U could (if you were extremely skilled) cut off the edge that is sticking out and glue it to the other side ;)
Also, I like the circle, how did you do that? Apparently routers are good, but I dare not to take mine out of the box for fear of grinding my finger off...I've never used one before.
EDIT: thank u mr. timmy...its 12:30..i think u should go to sleep now :doubt: I should, have to work tomorrow.

Routers arent too hard to use, just gotta watch ur fingers when working with small things. And have a good bench to mount the router too.
Also, watch out how you screw in your sub... Screws look cheap and ugly if they poke through the mdf in a perspex box.
edit... lol it's 1:30 over here :) I may router you in your sleep Eek  Just jokes! *grabs router...
*stab stab*
uuurrgghayayyya :(
*splat splat* *dirbble dribble*
Why can't i go to sleep?
have u ever wondered....? Robin hood robbed from the rich to give to the poor..but if you think about it the rich would have had to work for their riches too. robin hood isn't really doing the right thing
OH, subwoffaaaahhh, you could make a cool floating alpine logo thing on the box too, that would look awesome. I know someone that made door pods and cut out the alpine logo and made them float up. also, he put some blue leds behind them so when the doors open they would like up...FUUIKKLLLLY SIIIIK!!@! He has an awesome boot install too. white LEDs, illumintaed glass ford etched logos, carpet, subs, glass, custom made metal/aluminium frame thing...its cool

As for the face of the box the top it isnt actually screwed on and the top fits on perfectly without going over anywhere.
Making the hole was using the jigsaw to cut out a rough circle that would be easy to either file down or use router (which i chose the router option was really easy). using the router it took only 10 mins to finish off the circle nicely.
Luckily i wont see the face of my screws on the sub as ////ALPINE has provided a seal to cover them yay! look much better than just plain screws and the surround.

Uno what i've thought about? haveing a motorised mini disco ball in my boot as well as blue fluff and a marajuaniblaa*cough* smoke machine :D
yer, mirrors are cuul, could smash one up and attempt to glue them into the inside of the box
TF_ADVAN
30-12-2004, 10:56 PM
All this added weight of all the mirrors, glass perspex, neons im gonna need me a TH with 3.5 or a 3lt mivec.
Yeah mirrors is also a cool idea.
Though i just remembered helping my friend put skirts on his lancer.
:bowrofl:
They were big black and very very very badly put on he scratched the paint, broke one of my drill bits drilling into the metal, hes got stock 14" hubs and the skirts sit 12cm from the ground.
Also im considering putting in a neon under the parcel shelf so when i open the boot it comes on added light (Bonus)
Tom
Eeek you ok man? Ur not in a fit of rage right now? What you been upto tonight?
oh, i've had that pic as my avatar for weeks now. do you know, on my birthday, i stabbed someone with a chopstick in the side hip, broke the skin and drew a bit of bloood. nasty :P
Thats good jigsawy work bro' u should see mine...i couldn't find a thinner blade thing, so i just used the beeefy ones...it worked okk after a bit of filing tho :D
I had a red ccfl tube...BRIGHTER THAN YOUR CONVENTIONAL NEONZZZ!!!!! RING NOW AND GET A 10% DISCOUNT!!
no, not really, i had a red one on the bottom of the parcel shelf, and u wouldn't believe how many times it fell down. I used superglue, hot glue gun, silicon and bostick superman glue or something, and it would NEVER stick properly. I ended up just having the velco stick to the carpet on the sub box. who cares if they can see the red tube...they can go bliiinnddd!! Who are they anyways?

yep dats easy just wire it into the original light. You can have a little switch there to change back if you want it.
lol chopstick...
lol "they"... :shifty: How do you know about them?

ROFL stabbing is not good my older sis stabbed me with a pencil and the lead broke Ouch.
Yeah my router helped me make a perfect circle was fun to, made lots of noise and dust ( I was covered in dust completely after the routing).
The router is very handy for things like circles, might use it to etch ////ALPINE on the box.

I'm sure some have heard my story before...trboy? robero? oh come love me
anyhows, it was a dark and stormy night, about grade 10. i was at school and i was being nice and lent someone my pacer (different to the onen int he previious photo)
anyway, when he was done with it, he decided to throw it back at me to return it. in 1/10000 chances, i caught the damn thing with the lead (0.5mm) going straight into my palm. the little bit of lead got stuck in the skin for about 2 weeks. I later stabbed him vicously in the faec with that pacer

Thats why lead pencils are made out of graphite now ;)
I know the feeling of being covered in dust, I'm surprised just how much wind the things create... I forget how many rpm's our one does but it's pretty ridiculous.
Easy way to bevel the edge of a mdf spacer and have a nice flush mounted woofer, mind you its behind stock grilles and no one can see its beauty...
I know though...
it adds at least 4 dbs... ;)

i saw it a few days ago again, for about the 4th time in my life. Cheff tonnyY!!!
anyways, so u see the first woman, she uses the knife to try the tomota, but she fully stabs the tip into it, then it squirts stuff out onto her shirt.
later u see the guys using the product to cut stuff and they're holding it so firmly thtat htey're skin is all yellow and shivering. haha, funny.

By the way how long are u meant to play the sub at low volumes to properly wear it in as ive prolly done about an hour of medium level sound.
Also i can hear around the back of the roof near the middle some vibrations that are a bit annoying, know how to get rid of this vibration.

yeah that Cheff one is funny though he seems to waste a lot of food too, and now learn how to create untold wealth, or some kind ot contour cloud.
Tom
Vibrations are your friend. don't scare them away. Nothing really vibrates in my car, except for the boot lid. i think sound deadening helps. u can be lazy and try that spray on stuff, like that new le tan spray on sunscreen or something. As for running in your sub.. I had mine running at low vol for a while coz i was paranoid about police ppl..AARRGGH ITS INSPECTOR REXX, RUN!
doesn't anybody think robin hood isn't doing the right thing!??!!!
YEAH, WHAT A bad man, thruought the whole thing he chops up about 20kgs of food as well as a few boots, some plaster walls and a few sledge hammers.

Depends on the sub, some are 20 hours. Just keep at it for as long as you can. Some people play test tones to speed up the process... If you've got a battery charger just plug it in and and let it go for a day :)
Just don't pump it for as long as you can and you will be happy with it's performance when you need it... (ur sub that is ;))

Deaden ur boot, you can get cheaper deadener from jaycar or use flashtac.
I recommend g-spot, serenity max, or stinger roadkill. Stylyn Audio in boronia, or autobarn etc...
Use a tar based product, it just rolls on. Will solve your problems.
paints are pretty crap.

I cant sleep as for the past 3 weeks worked night shift till 6pm put my sense of time way out the window,
Today i thought it was wednesday until i saw that show Amazing Race and then looked on the pc to see Thursday.
Thanks for the suggestions s_tim_ulate ill have to get the sound deadening for sure though i will need to wear the sub in first and listen to what it sounds like when its going good to see what needs to be held down and what needs to be deadened.

I got rid of most of my noise, just sorted wiring out properly, found a better ground for my amps... I still want to upgrade my ground wire to 2 gauge.
Also want to run my headunit ground to the amp ground and pop some grommets in between the h/u and the metal bracket cos i think it might be grounding through the case.
Damn noisy magnas. You really notice it with splits. But only when the stereo's off... Something which never happens in my car considering i only drive to listen to music.

I actually listen more to my exhaust now ever since i got it installed, i cant seem to ignore it long enough to listen to the radio, also hearing the sound of the exhaust tells u if the car is running good or bad.
Though as i have bought a sub and amp i will now try an listen to the radio/CD more often now as it will sound a lot better.
Though my HU is too **** to control the bass and trebble and cant control sub either. Damn i need to get a better one.
(Also is it bad when ur head unit light starts to dim with more Bass from the sub)

got me a new chicky (almost) and we're gonna get maggoted on the saturday night to make up for the expected sh!t night we'll have tomoz. So should be good. Then I'll prob go upto lorne on monday to catch up with my other mates

eek...is this what ur talking about??
I reckon this would look awesome if someone did this to their magna!
First i would like to make the back of my box perspex to when u open ski port u can see the sub.
Mirrors, Neons, glass.......and yur putting vinyl on it so it doesnt stand out? bit of a contradiction in itself really, dont ya think?

Samurai i was meaning inside the box having the neons, mirrors etc the rest will be farily well hidden. so when u open the ski port will u see the neon or blacklight. the boot neon is mainly for extra light and will look nice too.
Box is still under construction spent most of today strengthening it a fair bit ready for the front and back to be put on, though the back is a temporary one until i get something clear.

pwwwhwhwhwhawhaaaaa DID U USE ENOUGH SCREWS BUDDY?!!!??!?!
The amount of screws u used was insane...damn...umm, other than that, it looks very neet and nice. though, I'd probably get a plane and fix up the edges, and buy some bog to go over the screws and what not.
Of course it would sound better in a box... :P
PS: be careful of the pencil marks...they might show up on the vinyl, be sure to remove them
TF_ADVAN
02-01-2005, 09:10 AM
Thanks.
I at first though that would be a good amount of screws as i saw a box with that many and though that i might need that many but then near the end i realised that it does look like a lot of em, but at least it will be strong now.
Yeah the edges are going to be planed today to make it look even nicer and ill be getting that putty stuff to cover the screws and ill sand the whole thing down too before i put the vinyl on.
And i will definately put a clear back as i just looked through the ski port and all i saw was MDF  id rather look at the back of my sub.
Tom
I have great idea...
maybe u could cut out a mitsubishi logo out on the back of the box and put glass on that ;)

MMMMMMMM Mitsubishi logo!
Thats a good i dea also i wanna put alpine on the front too and lots of Mitsubishi Logos. LOL
Well the boot install is nearly done. Some pics. Sub cables are like that as the box will soon be covered.
oh i like the look that amp...its late, are you always up this late? get the mrd m1000 or whatever, the big version of that thing. i've always wanted an amp with a big footprint. maybe you could get a small 2ch as well, i'm sure there's something that will look similar to that amp atm. then u could have two amps, one on each side, see, all looksies happy and well.
TF_ADVAN
02-01-2005, 10:54 PM
Yeah eek im always up this late cant stop surfing AM and net.
The amp does look good, its a good thing i got alpine and not some cheap brand, and yeah another amp like that would look very nice on the other side.
The MRD-1000 is huge and i would love to get one but at around $1600 its not cheap, though that could prob blow weak subs up.
Have u seen the alpine demo car on thier site its got 3 15" type R subs and 3 MRD-1000 they make up the rear parcel shelf.
