Hi,
I am going crazy with an idling problem in a 2.6lt 4 cyl TR Magna with a/c and p/s.This problem only happens in gear(Drive, as it is an auto)and doesnt happen in park or Neutral, its worse when the radiator fans kick in and the motor warms up.This week I have had the ISC replaced and a couple of leads,(by Mitsubishi) but still the problem persists.I then went to a highly respected EFI joint who replaced the fuel injectors, then checked the fuel pump and finally sent the ECU to be fixed as the capacitors were stuffed. I got it back today with the week costing me $810.00 and the problem is still there.Whats left?I cant do too much because the ECU is getting sent back under warranty.I dont want to pay anymore money for no gain.Anyone got any idea what else to try besides cleaning out the throttle body.I put a near brand new battery in as well.I just bought the car for my wife and it must be something small or too obvious.Your help will be greatly appreciated.I am only online once a day so please be patient if I dont reply straight away.

If its stalling at idle or when you go to accelerate you may wish to check the battery, altinator and earthing straps.
My brother had problems in his vp commo where some times he would have a really rough idle whilst sitting and the car would just stall. He also could have a problem where he could be driving along, hit the brakes and the car would stall/idle badly.
Turned out that the earthing strap that goes from the engine to the body of the car had come loose and the car wasnt earthing properly.
Might be worth a look

Sounds as the ISC motor not doing its job. Its a trip to Mitsubishi dealer and connect up the MUT-11 and check out the idle problem and make ajustments.Just shop around the dealers to see what they charge to connect up.Does it stall if use your accelerator to give it a faster idle while using your left foot on the brakes if you know what i mean.

When the ECU was sent in to get checked out, they rechecked the ISC to make sure if that was working properly(not at Mitsubishi though) cause they thought it may be faulty but it came up OK. Apparently some capacitors on the ECU had leaked onto the motherboard but they reckoned they could fix it (its going back to them under warranty now just incase they didnt fix it properly). It doesnt stall with your left foot on the brake and right foot on the accelorator,it needs to go up to 1000 rpm before it runs right. It has never stalled yet(touch wood) just feels like it wants to, the body jumps around like its got a 454 chev with a lumpy cam in it.No problem at any other speed and idles great in park or neutral(though it is running at 1000 rpm in both instances).
I'll check the earth leads out this arvo. Thanks so far guys.

The base idle may need to be set. They connect up the MUT-11 and park the ISC so they can ajust the mech idle to factory spec then release the ISC again, sometimes the ISC has not been unlocked and can cause idle problems but it is supposed to unlock itself after a time.Or you have a big vac leak, do you have or get a vac gauge to check this out.

One guy posted (fastmagna) that he removed the ISC and screwed it out and refitted it into the throttle body.He did not reconnect the wiring and started up the car, warmed it up and ajusted the idle.Once done he turned her off, reconnected the wiring and fired up with no problems. He did know what he was doing!

Still no luck, but I have to wait till next week cause the mechanic is on holidays. They reckon they'll fix it for no more cost to me so I cant really touch anything just yet.I'll let you know what they find.
Keep the suggestions coming though so if they cant find anything I can give them some ideas.
Thanks.

Its a strange problem, it only happened to my TS when it was warm or after a drive. Oh well I sold it last week so i won't have to worry about it anymore.... The people who bought it said they knew what the problem was so that will be interesting to see if they can fix it....

i had the same problem. i got the ecu checked but it came back ok, so i fixed heaps of **** on it but it still persisted. I got the ecu checked at a different joint and they said it was stuffed. I got a new ecu and the problem dissappeared. (A handy hint: Dissconnect the air flow meter on the car and it won't do it anymore

tr/ts magnas have "learning ecu's" and if the car is driven before it has a chance to establish the idle then it will stall when it's brought back to idle even after hours of driving.
If everything else seems to be right like no vac leaks or misses and isc is good
this might be worth trying:
1. disconnect battery for a few minutes
2. reconnect battery
3. start car with minimal throttle
4. leave car to idle in park or neutral for AT LEAST 10 minutes (don't touch the throttle once it's idling)
5. After 10 mins turn car off and restart and see if it idles in gear and also when the rpm is dropped to idle with the a/c and lights on
The above should be done every time the battery is disconnected in a tr/ts to reset the ECU idle

funny this has be brought up becuase im having the same problems with my TN (same motor) and ive done many things to fix this and it sh!ts the hell out of me sitting at the lights feeling the car shake and the revs jigging around, i have also noticed it runs smoother on regular unleaded and if i put premo in it makes it worse but the thing is its still there and pisses me off friday where gonna go around and do some more checks so see if we can find any thing else with it. even since i have had the car its done it ive replaced and adjusted the ics motor, got the injectors cleaned with new seals, checked for air leaks etc all thos things smoothed it out but still there also another funny thing it will run smoother with the a/c on as well still shakey a bit but not as much with it on
what would mitsi or a elec charge to check the ecu??

I actually just had a service at mistsubishi and heres what they fixed as my car was vibrating like a mutha-f***** at the lights! well it wasnt that bad but its unpleasant when your looking around and everyone else is relaxing.
they fixed;
Engine Control Relay + fuel pump
Fixed ECU - was blown
Engine bracket on the back
+plus full service and check!
these parts were not cheap and mitsubishi do like to charge full labour unless you know the service guy! hehe
So far car has been idling pritty nice, i mean most of the stuff on here is like, yet to fix it completly on these old cars is not worth it, now my magna 92TR only has a small amount of vibration, i noticed with my cousins almost brand new magna verade xi has a small amount of vibration
these models just feel like that its normal or what?!?!!
cheers good luck - let me know if you find the exact problem! thanks - p.s think its about $50 to get ecu read.
