Hi,
Am a friend of the guy with the black VRX you all know well.
I looking at a 93 Magna wagon.
It's got 192K on the clock and is running a 2.6 litre engine.
The car looks the goods however it has a tapping noise from under the cam cover. The noise is intermittant and sounds like tappets are getting enough oil in a pushrod car ?
The car is running a mineral based 40 odd weight oil.
Any ideas what this is? Is it bad or not a problem?
Thanks.

Most cars after they've done lots of k's usually get some sort of tapping noise. It could be lack of oil to a tapet i'm not sure but i doubt it's a major. I'm lucky with my V6, i've only got 1 tapet sorta making a bit of noise now and again, and she's done 255km's

20w-50 oil is recommended for the older engines.
Could be low on oil? Mine taps when it's low.
There is another way to fix it but I'll have to find the page again and I dunno where it is

I can tell you what it most likely is, a worn out timing chain.
I had a 2.6 TS and had this problem. The Timing change is supposed to be changed at 100,000kms but i managed to drag mine to 172km before it broke and did a little damage to my head, nothing to seriouse.
With the amount of kms i would say, if i hasn't been changed look at getting it done REAL quick, otherwise you might be up for another.
Like some of the other guys suggested, it could just be low oil pressure / level. Drain it, replace the filter and fill it up with the good stuff, probobly something a little thicker that 10/50

I checked the timing chain and it's not that. The proble is either the hydrulic lash adjusters or some sort of hydrulic lifters not getting enough oil.
Quick hint to tell if the timing chain is shot is to rev the engine and see how fast it takes for the revs to drop back down to normal. With a stuffed timing chain the engine doesn't drop it's revs as quick as the chain takes up slack. ;)

I've got a similar noise coming from my 91 TR which has done 167k.
I've found that it makes the most noise while the car is still cold and mostly at night.
But since the valve stem seals are begining to wear on her, they're going to be replaced shortly & hopefully I can shead some light on the problem.
Also I'm not sure if it could be my timing chain either, as my manual doesn't show whether the chain has been replaced or not. Either way, will find out shortly, one way or another.

All TR,/s 4 and V6 have problems with the lash adjusters.
It is not a big deal to change them, make sure you bleed them before putting them in. They are a bit exxy to buy but.
The timing chain does not need changing at 100,00km, it is the cam belt on the V6 that gets changed.
The Chain only needs changing when it is noisy, usually it is the balance chain that rattles. There is now a kit that removes the balance chain for the 2.6l magna's

Hey Mal,
Where can you get the kit that removes the balance chain for the 2.6l?
And can you feel me in on lash adjusters?
Cheers.

Hyd. Lifters or lash adjusters are a metal conatiner that goes between the Cam shaft lobe and the rocker arm (which in turn forces the valve down.)
The container fills full of oil rising slowly (compared to a direct connection) thus lifting the rocker arm.
From what I can tell the Magna has very small holes in the part that lets the oil in, these over time fill full of the usual engine crap and block up.
Hope this sheds some light ;)

Ah thanks mate :)
I've only heard of them refered to as hyd lifters, but never known their exact workings.
So whats the chances on me being able to change them? :D
Might have to add that to the list under the stem seals & valve springs I want replaced, hehe.

I wouldn't do any head work meself but if your keen I can loan ya me shop manual if your in WA.
Personally if you wanna save bucks rip the head off your self and send it off to a recond shop to do the deeds.
Looking at the Astron motor in the TR of late I've decide to pass on any major work myself as it looks like a complete bastard to work on
