Hey Guys,

I've signed for a 1999 TH executive that seems to be in superior condition than the other magnas I’ve looked at, no trolley dents, scratches etc. However, it does have a weird metallic chattering noise at idol. We've pin pointed it to the gearbox as the noise ceases when you press the clutch in.

I've requested it to be looked & fixed before i hand over the cash, however would like to know what people think it may be? Will the dealer fix it properly or just a temp solution (has a 12 months warranty btw).

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums mate, I'm sure we will all be a wealth of information for you (but right now... I got no idea! ;))

Peace

I'm pretty sure the dealer would fix it. If they don't just act angry and keep hassling them until they do

Oh, btw, welcome, I'm sure u'll find a lovely bunch of people here. Enjoy

Far from me to question the great Booya but wouldn't it be the other way round if it was the thrust bearing, ie making noise when the clutch is applied?

last time i checked, ceases means to halt or stop....so i mean the noise only happeneds when the clutch is not applied ;)

i had that same chattering in the same sequence (ie - chattering when clutch is OUT - nil sound when clutch is in gear or IN alltogether) at idle only - was a thrust bearing

Broken clutch finger? I replaced the clutch on a TN Magna with exactley the same problem and when i pulled off the pressure plate there was a broken finger on it. Could also be one of the clutch plate springs.

Pull the clutch off and replace it with a Heavy Duty one anyway!

Ok, interesting.
I'm just going off my old Galant/sigma rear wheel drive gearboxes but to my knowledge, all clutches are much the same in operation.
When the pedal is pushed the clutch (being cable or hyd actuated) thrust bearing assy moves fwd disengaging the clutch plate from the pressure plate and the bearing pushes against the sprung fingers on the pressure plate.
So basically what your saying is that the thrust bearing is making noise under no or minimal load and goes quiet when under load, hard up against the sprung fingers.
You've had the problem b4 so I'm not doubting that your right. But with the old Gals, the thrust bearing being on the way out is indicated by noise when the clutch is applied.
A noise like is described in this thread I would more likely attribute to gearbox input shaft bearings, but again this is from experience gained on the old Galants and sigmas.

Broken clutch finger is a good possibility as well. Guess you really need to get in there and have a look.
