View Full Version : power cablin' n fuses n stuff
Herlllo
its umm, nearly 1am, humid as hell and its about to rain i think.
anyways, i think my mind is playing games on me regarding my power cabling and amps n stuff. Uhh, I currently have a 4gauge power cable to a 60 amp agu fuse holder...and then to a 4ga to 8ga fused distro block.
anyways, i've brought a Phoenix Gold QX900.1D amp (900wrms...but tested to be around 1100wrms) and i also have a blaupunkt, 50wrmsx4. theoretically should draw around 100A+-10A (wildd guess off the top of my head) at HIGH volumes.
I'm sure the 4ga should handle it just listening to normal music...tho i dont know about my main fuse holder. Its a crappy agu fuse..and 60A. I think i need an anl fuse like, 120A or something. Problem is i've spent nealry 200 bucks on all this stinger stuff like, two weeks ago. 2gauge perhaps? 0ga is overkill. thoughts? i'm sure i need a new fuse&holde.r

Don't get freaked out cos of mine, it's overkill... Forget 0 gauge. Although nothing exceeds like excess...
Ur 4 gauge will be fine upto say 60-70 amps. Over 130 amps and you should go 0 gauge. Consider going 2, but I think its a waste of money if you've already installed cabling (thats why i went big to start off with ;))
0 gauge is bloody expensive. Unless you can get it cheap I wouldn't bother.
Think about getting an ANL fuse, they give less resistance, but it's hard to find low fuses under 80 amps for them. Not really worth it if you're under that mark anyways. Your fuse should equal the total fuses of your amps.
Did you end up getting the DD of CAA?

yeah, cheapest 0ga i could find was aroud 20-30/m. I think if i was technically to be running both my amps at high volumes...it would be near the limit of the 4ga. Yeah, ANL fuses are gay, 40 dollars, and 10 dollars for a fuse.
Yup, I got that DD off CAA :D Postage from vic to qld for it is a biatch tho. It weights like, 12kgs or something, lol
Instead of running 0ga why not just run 2 x 4ga? Cheaper, easier and achieves the same thing.

Yep, that would work! You'll need distros and another fuse, but would probs be cheaper.
Eek, I almost bought that ages ago the thing was on there for months... How much did u end up going for it?
I thought if I bought it I'd have to spend heaps on an amp to power the thing and wanted to go down the sq route over the spl route.
But good stuff! congrats!

run with the 4ga
still pretty heavy duty over a relatively short run.
if you find the amp/amps are "slow" or cutting out consider a 1farad cap in parallel right next to it.

lol, can i say it for u?/ CAPS ARE USELESS......sort of, unless your running mega insane huge massively nutbreakingly high powerd system then money is better spent on upgrading the charging system (i.e biger and better alternator, better grounding, better battry (optima yellowtop) and upgrading all the wiring)

Forget the fuse and use a Circuit Breaker....

Circuit breakers...hmm, i actually wouldn't use a circuit breaker. Unless i get like a 300 dollar one, i would rather be better off using a fuse. Some circuit breakers are stupid.
Anyways, I guess i'll stay with the 4ga, i just need to find a 4-2x4ga splitter. I found a PG amp that does a little over 1kw to power the DD sub so that hopefully will go well. Like everything i do, my mind is still playing games on me. i still cant decide whether to go ported or sealed for the sub. I mean, DD subs are awesome, tho slightly SPL orientated, should still sound good for SQ. see if i can build a ported box that'll go to about 40hz. I like LOW, loud bass
if i can find a cheap cap (100 or less) with a digital display, i don't see what hurt it could do to me lol
Edit: or should i get a circuit breaker? that thing is cheaper than a brand new ANL fuse holder + fuse...plus it will be cheaper in the long run if i ever blow a fuse..
I've never ever blown a fuse doing car audio before :doubt:

Cap = rice factor........
I ummed and arrred for a while and decided to go with sealed. Sealed gives the subs more control and less "boom" but you need a bigger amp to drive them (you already have this by the looks). Sealed enclosures are generally smaller too.
But sounds like you want the "boom" so go vented and buy some earmuffs or at least book ahead to your audioligist with blown out eardrums lol
Circuit breakers are fine. At least you dont need to carry around spare fuses and what happens when your on a cruise and you loose your "doof, doof" and have no spare fuse??
cheap rice that wouldn't do any harm to your stereo...why not :D
hehe, i'll see what interesting circuit breakers i can find next time i'm at jaycar :)
i think i'm over sealed...i think i'll go ported, with a slight touch of SQ  lol

Jaycar should have the distribution block your after and you may get one with a LED voltmeter built into it. You could also get the battery terminal with the LED Voltage meter in it also. I have the catalogue open in front of me as we speak.
hehe, and i am about 20 seconds from the website :P
the catalouges cost money to get don't they? Yeah, i've seen them, but I've had bad experiences with battery terminals not being able to fit on my terminal half the damn time. As for pimp distro blocks...mm, i can't see the point of spending 60 bucks on a distro block, coz i'm bloody scungy too.....i can't decide....lol
stinger has one i need.

tho...fused distro blocks look better :P
The best distro blocks in the world are made by Phoenix Gold i reckon.

Looks like Jaycar doesn't have what you want then. I did see one of those Caps with an LED display on it at JB Hi-Fi last week. Looks cool but it's practicality is null i think.
Good luck!

yeh i gotta big stinger 0 gauge to 2 x 0 gauge distro block... Things aren't cheap, but you can sell em off pretty easily if you buy stinger...
If you're getting a distro block, get the biggest you can, Atm I'm using 0 gauge in and only 2 x 8 gauge out before I do a proper wiring job and the big 0 gauge holders fit anything in easily.
As for circuit breakers, they're handy for comps... 30 second kill power rules... But besides that I put a bit more trust into fuses, at least you can be certain that they'll blow instantly when they say they will.
But each to their own. I'm sure they work fine.
Hmm with the DD, it isnt a sq sub... Far from it. But wouldn't do too bad sealed up in a box i guess...
Would have to be a HUGE box though, Make it as big as you can...
You will need to go nuts with deadener on your boot. Trim your crossovers down really low to get some good rumble.

Surfin porn!!!! Nah, slept during the day (i injured my foot so i cant go anywhere) so was wide awake and looking for something to do....
Oh, i used to work at Jaycar in Adelaide and you will be lucky to get anything cheaper unless you come across a dodgy sales person. They have tightened up over the last 2 years.
Well, I decided to visit my local Jaycar and guess what happened....

Oh, ring terminals are so cheap there! Its either Jaycar or stinger 4ga crimp terminals. I've spent about 20 bucks on stinger terminals already..but now i'm gonna buy jaycar ones.
They also have a new range of toys to play with. One of them includes a device which detects your pulse, and it changes it zaps you. Another one of my favourites are remote control tanks. You wirelessly control a tank, and if you get shot, the remote control will give u an electric shock..etc etc. fun toys :D
