View Full Version : Unleaded Vs Octain 98
Yes I know it is spelt differently.
I took my car into the auction place for warrenty job but the guy told me that I should fill up with 98 octain, now my question is, should I even if I dont know what the previous owner filled the tank with?

Higher octane fuel is cleaner because its more processed than regular unleaded and requires more heat to ignite than regular unleaded. this means it doesnt pre-ignite before the combustion part of the engines cycle. So that gives u a very slight increase in fuel economy.
Also if you are "fully shick" and put high octane in your car, it will give u Extreme performance... :doubt:
But only if you are fully shick.... mate

Also to answer your question, i dont know why he told you to use 89 octane, seems strange to me for a simple 6cyl family car. Unless the internals of the engine have been modified for performance use, u shouldnt need to.
Even the ralli-arts were designed to not need high octane fuel.
You dont need to have performance parts or a good car to use it and have it's benefit.
Even my gen1 has more guts, more responsive throttle, doesn't knock whatsoever (can even advance it way loads more without it knocking), better fuel economy, etc etc list goes on
My gen1 gets another 100km out of a tank - so it works out to be cheaper... and i got the bonus of a more resposive throttle.
My dad has a new hyundai elantra... he got to melbourne from adelaide with still about 1/4 of a tank left, and was impressed at the thottle response. he puts that in his car if it's cheap... I have to put it in all the time cos my motor knocks (yes... it's timed right, and i aint retarding it either)
End rant
Bill
maybe he wants u to fill it up so he can syphin it all out on you..
Im just wondering because it seams strange for a request like that, I thought the car could just run on normal unleaded. They guy says his machanic that he uses is pedantic(sp?), but the good thing about that is that he cleaned everything out, fixed everything internal that was a problem and did a full service including replacing the 100k spark plug.

98RON even in a non hi-performance engine without a knock sensor (3rd Gens), yields benefits in terms of production against detonation under high ambient temperatures or high loads. As for fuel economy that only improves slightly with the high density Optimax fuel (don't think Synergy or Ultimate are high density). Performance doesn't change.
Ok, Ill keep filling up with unleaded then. Speaking to the machanic because my injectors got cloged but he cleaned them he says to keep them clean run 98OCT always.

This topic has been discussed in detail many times before.
From my experience having a 3rd gen with a stock 3.5, i have run 98 for months and then gone back to standard unleaded and honestly noticed no difference at all. You have to concentrate so hard to pick a difference and even then, its most likely just the placebo effect.
As Gerard and Tek said, it can help with pre ignition which only usually occours if your car is out of tune or if it is carboned up neither likely on a 3rd gen. If your timing is how it should be and your engine hasnt been modified then its not worth putting it in. By all means, give it a go but i'm sure you will find the same if you have a 3rd Gen.
Cool, thanks for everyones input with this "problem" I will prolly try a tank or 2 of 98Oct. But the cheaper price of normal unleaded petrol will always win with me.

You can always compromise and run PULP (95 RON)

Why do you say 3rd Gens dont have knock sensors? My 2nd Gen V6 definitly had them.
Are you saying Mitsu went backwards and no longer installed them in the 3rd Gens? I find that very very hard to believe. Whats your source of info?
I'm a poor uni student on a casual job...of course i'm poor, scungy and a hell of a tightarse
I don't notice any diff at all between premium, high octane, optimax, bp ultimate or whatever they are vs normal unleaded. No diff in performance or range...but maybe thats just me :doubt:
by the way..don't you just love the spelling on this forum? First it was itake feneobl, which was supposed to be intake funnel, and now there's octain lol :doubt:

Doesn't make a difference to mine either although I know it should . Currently still getting crappy 10.4L/100 HWY and 11.6 City, which is down from hign 13s since I got the car before christmas'04.
the australian Standard fuel consumption tests for magnas quotes 8.0L/100km for HWY and 12L/100 City. the AS is normally a very accurate. (I wish I wrote down the website reference for this post. bum.)
So I still have a problem: my Hwy outcome are way high, although managed to beat the standards in City mode-Did I mention before I'm really gentle?
Changing to right grade of oil on MOnday and then checking out O2 Sensor with friend.
safe driving everyone.

I always use hi octane fuel for several reasons. My car definatly drives better with motor being more responsive and smoother running. There is also the fact that iit is cleaner there for beign better for your motor ( dunno about u guys but i care about my car) And is also better for the enviroment.

That's because your engine was originally made for leaded fuel, which back in the 80's were around 97 RON. Although just before lead was phased out a couple of months ago, leaded fuels from the pump were as low as 91 RON, depending where you went.

You are still running in the engine...wait a couple more months of driving.

I recently got a new motor from TR magna - efi model i'm guessing... i'm using my old leaded carby + dizzy
