Hi there, this is my first posting. I have been reading this forum with great interest as finally there is somewhere to get ideas for Magnas!

My dilema is that like a little boy on Christmas morning, I went out and gathered all the parts and fitted the CAI to my VRX as per TH Smoker. BUT my car ran like a dog. It would stall and die in the arse. This still occurred after 3 days of persistance. So I ripped it out.

I have read that EZ Boy has enclosed his K & N filter and I was thinking along the same lines. But with the use of an Aluminium sheet that can be purchased from Bunnings.

Has anyone had any simialr problems with CAI? Does anyone have a template or a guide to say enclosing the air pod?

I too have TH smokers kit on my TH but with no problems like you mention.
Wat u mention i think would not help wat is happening. These are the things i would check for
1. Are you using an oval pod filter (K&N), round ones have been known to cause problems
2. Check the wiring of the air flow sensor that you must have extended
3. Did you block the hole left when you removed a hose (the hose near the throttle body) which now would be located near the pod.
4. All conncetions are sealed properly

That is wat i would look at first because the kit should work without these problems

As mr_mrquart suggested,

Ensure that all wiring to the MAS sensor is correct and that your remembered to plug it in (don't laugh youd be surprised how many forget too lol)

Also make sure any exposed vaccum lines are sealed off correctly. I have the K&N CAI kit which is just a more expensive version on TH Smokers and I haven't had any problems with it at all with my VRX.

Thanks guys, but I plugged all hoses etc and wired correctly and made sure the plug was secure on the MAS sensor. Believe me, I went over it quite a few times.

I have the oval K&N pod filter. One thing is I did not like hwo the filter was exposed once moved.

Thinking of boxing the whole thing in as I don't have to stuff around moving the MAS sensor again. Any ideas on that?

Are you sure it's not problems with the POD? I've got the simota pod and it works like a dream.

I think if u used a 5" pod (or whatever) pod that didn't block off the mas honeycomb thing as much as a traditional smaller one would, it might fix the problem

from what ive heard its a fairly common problem. When a CAI or pod is put in the engine can have stalling problems and ideling problems. Even something as simple as the CAI ive put into my car has caused it to idle a bit rougher and at a lower rpm. still havnt been bother to adjust it yet tho. too lazy :doubt:

In answer to questions TH smoker, my car initially stalled at idle then after a good 15 to 20 mins into driving it would die in the arse. Had to either downshift, or go to neutral to keep the thing from stalling. Just when it seemed to be all ok, when i pulled up in the driveway, it would stall. BUT it did sound good when giving it some stick!

I have also taken the extended wiring off.

Did you reset the computer when you installed the kit( disconnect battery for bout half hour)? When i installed mine i found the same problems as you are experiencing. But after about 100ks approx it came good. I think it just needs time to learn new air flow characteristics.

I did disconnect the battery, but not for an hour. Surely the computer resets itself in under 100 km? I couldn't drive with it like that for 100 km. But when I took the CAI out and just re fitted the pod filter, I disconnected the battery again and it was fine.

Hmmm interesting, anyone else shed some light?

if your going to reset the ECU you need to disconnect the battery for a couple of hours not just on and off. then it forgets all your bad driving habbits, and learns a whole lot of new one. :) and as i said i know a fair number of people that have had their cars effected by CAI's or Pods. What rpm is it trying to idle at? originally my engine would idle at about 800rpm. it now idles at 600rpm with my CAI and is a fairly rough idle. just something i have to adjust when i can be bothered. its too hot to do it now. ill think about it next week. lol
