I've always gone Pioneer, cos they've never let me down.

dont go panasonic. my friends stopped playing cd's after 6 months, and cost 200 to fix.

oh, and jvc are pretty sweet too.

clarions fallen as one of the top audio company's in my books. They're tvs are still sweet though. Anyhow back on topic. Either of these 4 brands are good for headunits:
alpine
pioneer
jvc
sony <-- normally wouldnt put this but cant say ive heard anything bad about them.. they look really good too

Which.

If you where on a budget i'd go with a JVC unit, but with $1000 to speond on the head unit i think you can stretch a little further than that. Alpine is where i would be looking, whats the rest of your system like? Is it some crazy $20k system you wouldnt even think of letting an mp3 within 10km of? Alpine units start at about $500 and at a grand mp3 or CD teh build and sound quality is amazing. Best bet would be to go to your local and play around with a few different units.

edit, sorry didnt read your whole post. im just repeating what you already know

For around 10000 u can get some pretty decent headunits. I use JVC, and I can say it's perfect and i've never had any problems with it. Pioneer and sony are ok too. I've installed something like, 3 different pioneer headunits and 2 sony ones, and from what i've gathered, pioneer headunits are better. Clarion..hmm, i haven't had much experience with it, but it seems the high end ones are good.

Of course alpine is good, so is every other branded headunit at $1000. headunits from eclipse, and nakamichi are also worth a look (though may be a bit over budget, but 2nd hand stuff doesn't hurt)

I'd get either a Alpine CDA-9833 or a CDA-9835 if you can find one cheap. I managed to pick a CDA-9831 when tonkins had a special for $500 and love it so the 2 models above it can only be better.

What will you be running? Do you just have a headunit now? Are you running your speakers off an amp? Are you running aftermarket speakers?

If you aren't then don't bother with an expensive h/u as you won't be able to appreciate it, money would be better spent on other items, especially front splits.

Otherwise I'd recommend Eclipse or Alpine decks for your price range...
Nakamichi would be awesome, but way too expensive, then Pioneer, JVC and so on.

Peace

I would recommend JVC or Eclipse headunits. I don't think you need to spend quite that much on a H/U though but rather invest in better speakers all round.

:stoopid: eclipse h/u rate very well from what my bro has told me, but if u were to go for a top end alpine deck and u dont mind giving up that fraction of quality (mostly unnoticed to most ppl) of mp3's, ur 12 stacker will almost be obselete cause u wont need it when u can fit 12 albums on 1 cd

thanks guys

i will look into this eclipse brand as i have the catalogs now for most lines

i would love a nakamishi they are great but i think they start high and as stated it would be clever to spread the $$$ around as i only need splits to finish the job this could work well

i have mates with sony and jvc and i dont mind the jvc units but i think the alpine is where i am going atm

i have a bit more thinking required b4 i put this alltogether

Try spending $600-$1000+ on splits... Money better spent IMO...

Look at Diamond, Dynaudio, Morel, MBQuartz etc...
Even if you spend $400 on a headunit. The difference in signal quality will not be as great as if you were to put that money into a good set of well powered splits. And the more money you spend on a headunit the more boring it looks ;) well at least with the high end gear...

I just bought myself an Alpine 9831 for $649 installed. The retail for this unit is now $599 which I think is the best for the money. Very happy so far with my purchace and the time correction adjustments really makes a difference to the sound.
