Ive just changed over my insurance from RACV to Justcar to save about $400 on my premium each year, which now opens up the possibility for ditching my stocky veranda/sport rims which are 16x6 on my TH V6 Si.
I rang Vic roads today, who reckon width should be no more than 25mm, diameter no more than 15mm. Legally im limited to 17x7 or 18x7 (if the exist).
People with 18"s or bigger on executives/veradas, what are you experiences with cops?
My original Budget was about $2200k for 18s + tires, but im turning towards 17s due to the price being in the $3k bracket, or the lack of quality in 18s at that price. Im getting no help from any tire places who think wheel sizes are restricted to insurance company requirements only...

i have 18"x7.5" i dont think the cops give a crap, i know WTCHME has been asked to change his wheels before but his car is too hot for words so the cops probably pick on him
My alloys cost 1800.00 in total so i think you can get a better deal if you look around,

Ill save my money and go with some good 17x7s. no point having an unroadworthy car (that is having rims wider than 7 inches).
Thanks for the responses

1) how come Just car is insuring your car cheaper than RACV ??????Please please tell me how. (every time i askthem they tell me approx $1K more than RACV)
2) Yes, in Vic legally you can only go 2" high/ big i.e. 16-18 and 1" wider 6 -7. And as good 18 x 7 are very hard to find so being 17 x7 is good option with lot of choice too.

you can find 18 x7 but the problem is that they look like shyte......
i'd suggest going for 18's. i got 17's thinking that they would do.............. no they dont.
besides, if you're going with JCI, they will cover 19's. they covered mine.

how old are u? driving history? RACV arent high risk...they want me to have 16"s, 17"s or stockies otherwise they wont insure me at all.
JCI siad they'll do whatever i want, they dont wanna know what size, just how much theyre worth.
With stockies on my TE RACV want 816$ (full comp)
With 18" JCI want ~990$ (full comp)
btw im 21 with no driving ****ups

1) - I had made a claim through RACV, so my premium increased. They wanted nearly $1600 a year on rating 3  I was previously paying about $1200 on rating 2. JCI put me on $1100 at rating 2, covering all mods including stereo. The thing about JCI is the excess is about $1200 whereas the RACV under 25 excess is about $800. But if i dont have an accident im saving about $400-500 a year
2) i went with 18x7.5 rims in the end.

In Victoria you must comply with all the following:
- Wheel diameter can be increased as much as you want provided the tyre profile is reduced accordingly, however overall rolling diameter cannot be more than 15mm larger than stock.
- Wheel width can only be increased by 1inch maximum.
- Wheel offset cannot change by more than 12.5mm per side.
- Tyre load rating must be equal to or above that required by the vehicle.
- Tyre width must match wheel width (within guidelines of Wheel & Tyre association of Australia).
- No wheel spacers are allowed to be used to increase offset.

well if insurance covers it, it doesnt matter what the cops say. if im in an accident where the cops are called its likely my car will be written off anyway so no defect-sticker for me, so long as everything gets paid for
:D

Unroadworthy car leaves it at the insurers discretion as to whether they want to pay you or not. It also means that the cops can charge you for driving an unroadworthy car that possibly lead to the accident happening (investigation will occur).

Legally insurance can not cover any illegal items :)
and yess cops will fine you if your car will be unroadworthy, which will make it unlawfull for you to drive on road and any accident caused by it is your responsibility. Eventhough some insurance companies will say they will cover any thing but there will be thiny condition somewhere stating "only covered if its legall".
