View Full Version : Steering wheel shudder and noise

3 nights ago i sprayed my callipers and the middle of my discs on the front wheels.I also had new brake pads put on. I have noticed when i am driving that the steering wheel shudders when i brake, especially when braking while going around a corner. This had me worried but not too much. Last night i had to go out, but on the way home i noticed a sqweeling noise. It sounded like the back wheels to me but can not be sure. My BF got out of that car and told me to drive so he could see if there was a problem but the noise wasnt there. as soon as he hoped in the car the noise came back. we dont know what the problem is but i am not wanting to drive it till i know what the problem is.
Could the sqweeling be paint that has got onto the disc and the pads are touching it?
does anyone know what could cause a shudder after taking off discs and brake pads?
i need help to find out what this noise and shudder is and any help is appreciated.

Did you do the pads and disc painting yourself...

Sounds like to me there is a loose callipar somewhere..

Id be removing all the wheels and checking the bolts. If you removed the callipars to paint them there is a good chance one of the two bolts on the back are loose...

check your wheel nuts too. my brother had a habit of forgetting to tightne his wheel nuts on his 180b.

Or overtensioned wheel nuts. If you have a torque wrench, do them up to the correct setting with that.

Maybe the new pads haven't bedded in or the discs needed a quick skim?

Or if you haven't got a torque wrench, ask bf to hold the end of the wrench with a straight arm, bend knees placing body weight on it till it stops tightening. Keep wrench approx horizontal - tightening torque will be close to design requirements.

after reading my magna bible i found out that i was meant to mark the discs where i took them off and replace them the same way. i did not do this and was wondering if this could cause the shudder?
is there any way to find out which way to put them back on properly?
or
does it not matter?
if i was to buy new discs could i just put them on or is there a certain way they need to go on?

^^ Yes it's called brake disc to hub indexing and is essential to minimise lateral runout. Also as mentioned, if you do not torque wheel nuts evenly/correctly it can also lead to the same condition. Unfortunately once you develop brake shudder the only way to get rid of it 100% and lasting (until you do something like this again) is to replace the discs and pads and properly bed them in. Machining the discs with or without replacing the pads simultaneously is a short term solution.
