I already have to 12" subs from my previous car (1985 Holden Barina) and am looking at buying 2 15" subs to add to my collection, has anyone ever attempted this kind of install? I have a brief idea of how i would like everything to go in, but would like your input as to practicality and the technical aspects of it as well... thing like Are the 15's going to cancel out the 12's or vise versa?
Here's a copy of my plan (MSPAINT STYLE BABY!)
thanx in advance =)

do you still drive a barina? or is this going into a magna? i doubt they'd fit in the barina as 15's usually require a huge box.... i'm about to put 4x12's in my magna (already got 2, adding another 2) i'll post some pics on how it goes!

nah my mother reversed into my barina and wrote it off (in my own driveway!) so its all going in a 1994 Magna... spose i should pt that in the original post =)
any ideas would be nice? comments on my plan would be nice as well.

ive got 2x12s and 1x15 and ive been told that im crazy!
but you just took that title from me.. YOUR CRAZY :P
haha!!
should be pumpin tho :D:D
make sure you have 2 amps JUST to run each of the subs..
ie, 1x4ch amp to run the 12's
and 1x4ch amp to run the 15's
hmmm.. after a bit of thinkin perhaps maybe
1x4ch to run 1x12 and 1x15
1x4ch to run 1x12 and 1x15
:S
im sure that would work as well :S
good luck :P
my setup is
1x4ch to run 2x12's
1x4ch to run 1xsplits and 1x15
:D

I was told not to fire the subs at each other as the sound will cancel out...
Therefore the fact that the 12" subs are aimed at eachother would make them less effective as if you aimed them away from each other...
Same I guess would go for the 15" firing at each other..
Again this is what I was told and I am not an expert... but it made sense.
I gather you want to see the pretty subs through the ski hole so thats why you are firing them at each other...
May I suggest a mirror setup or something maybe like this...

Is this a wagon or sedan? Cos for starts - those 6x9's wont fit in the parcel shelf like that (i know I am picky hehe)
But maybe you might like to consider not getting 6x9's and instead getting some decent quality splits?? the 6x9's are cheap bass for those with no subs - so with 2x12's and 2x15's I am sure you wont need the bass in the 6x9's so some decent SQ would be nice!!
Perhaps another way to have them would be to have the 2x12's rear facing between the rear struts - and have the 15's facing up towards teh sky?? Make for a funky looking install!!
And should sound excellent as well!!

providing you dont fire speakers of different sizes (due to frequencies etc) you should be right, firing the 12's at each other made alot of noise in the barina and sounded alot better than a friends MTX 15" (the 12's cost me $90 each)the 15's are only slightly firing at each other but are more facing the lid of the boot.
not real sure about the mirrors... wouldnt they break?

Lol they do in TR's - thats the way they go (in sedan), in te+ they are around the other way..

you dont mix subwoofer cone sizes to coverf the same frequency range.
a large # of problems are introduced such as phase distortion, uneven power distribution and effiency issues. you would certainly archieve a higher spl and better sq with the 15's then with the 15's and the 12's
came up in the latest hot 4's mag

I've seen picture of Magna where the guy had 2 12" subs in the each corner of the boot, 2 15" on some wierd angle where the spare wheel goes and 3 amps across the floor just behind the seat. Looked awesome 8) [/img]

with the way i had things setup i was still going to have a practical amount of boot room as well as a neat install. might just be a matter of trial and error.
anyone have any more ideas?

wont happen
nope. cos remember you will need the correct space in the boxes that holds the subs ;)
1x 15" sub is one damn big BOX!!! (its my whole tyre well :S) so 2 of em *faints* plus 2 12's... starts having a fit...
yer.. say bi bi to boot space

I fit 1 amp in the boot and raised the floor three inches and the boot space is reduced - that is with no subs - and u wanna put in 4 and still ahve room in the boot - yep good luck on that one!!

ok ok ok im sorry, i havnt got the car at the moment to measure things up.. just been down tot he local installer and firing subs at each other will increase the spl, i dont think he quite understood how i want to set it up, but he said loading the 2 sizes into the same space was a big no-no, which shouldnt be a big deal for my intended setup.. as for the boot space.. screw it the groceries will go on the back seat
work calls.. must run.

I've decided on the setup. the pic below is by no means to scale and i havnt had a chance to measure up anything yet but it should give you all a reasonable idea as to what im going to do...
the box is going to be built to fit between the the wheel arch's. Sound proof foam between the boxes to stop the subs competing against each other. The 2 15's will be facing not only each other, but will be aimed at the boot lid. The same sound proof foam used between the boxes will be used in the boot lid to stop any rattling. Ill take some photos as i build it all next weekend :D
Zach Out
never mix subwoofer sizes, stick to 12" or to 15" dont have both!!!!!
they cancel each other out and create all kinds of problems!!!!
if u want rnb bass put 2 15's in and take the 12's out,
if u want a mix of both techno and rnb 12" are best
get another 2 12" instead of the 15"
thats 2 people who have said dont do it,
so if u buy the 15" and run them with the 12" dont come crying when it sound shithouse :)
