View Full Version : Auto transmission & Timing Belt
G'day all,
Just a few questions.
I am in the market for a TE magna - there are two that i am looking at, one is an automatic with 93,000km's on the clock and another 144,000km's and its a manual.
There has been a lot of talk about this timing belt and if i went the auto with 93k on it i'd have to change it soon - how much roughly would this cost and can it be done yourself??
Secondly I have hear allot about the auto's... they seem pretty troublesome or are a majority reasonably good? and how much does it cost to fix any probs with transmission? as apposed to changing stuff for a manual (ie clutch etc..) and furthermore, the 143k manual has no service records as the previous owner apparently serviced it himself, is it likely that the timing belt would've been changed at 100,000km's?
so anyways, basically what would you guys do? go the auto or the manual?? i'd like the auto only coz its got fewer kilometres (but needs a timing belt straight up nearly)!
thanks fullas
Regards

Maybe keep looking around - might be able to find a manual with fewer k's - don't go the auto - you will regret it everyday after!!

in defense for the auto theyre not that bad considering the thousands that get sold in comparison to the relative few manuals they seem to be fairly good. and if your looking for performance i would agree with manual go for the manual transmission you wont regret it they are very responsive.. but if you want an everyday car and cant always be bothered driving a manual theres nothing wrong with the automatics - infact the magna auto is one of the most intelligent responsive autos i have driven and i think they are a great gearbox.
thats my take on it anyway :)

TButcher,
Seeings your only selling the black TE and probably won't get your money back for them do you want to sell those Parabolics to me ?
I'll give you my stock TE lights so you can sell it with them.
Just an idea

Guru and everyone else,
I am a uni student, and i need a good reliable car to get me around. Obviously being a uni student i don't have much money so i need something reliable that's not going to cost me a lot of money in repairs. The magna made an impression on testdriving the manual one i spoke of in my first post. Haven't driven an auto yet.
Performance isn't a major factor - sure it's nice but i really don't care whether its an auto or manual, i like the 93km's one beter because of lower km's but the manual seems like it would be less vulnerable to transmission problems.
Thanks anyways.
Axle,
Anyone else with opinions i'd be happy to hear from you :)

If you are looking for a cheap reliable car - you cant go past the old ealr-mid-80's corollas.
OK i know its not a magna - but those things are unbreakable!!
I used to own one - i learnt to drive in it and so did my brother and chances are so will my youngest brother - and we had no issues with it - and considering 3 learner drivers and 2 P-Platers - it is going strong!!
Besides - it iwll be cheaper to own, run and repair than a magna - but the magna has a lot more style!!

well if performance isnt your only thing then theres nothing wrong with an auto! they go pretty damn hard (ive got the tiptronic but its no diff than a normal auto with a manual gear selector) and it goes pretty damn hard :)
Welcome to the magna family

Manual,
yeah agreed, but i need a larger car to cart all my crap to and from home and i come from the far outback upper western corner of NSW which is a long way from anywhere. I need a largeish comfortable car that will travel at least 7 hours with ease and won't break down in the middle of no-where. I was impressed ona test drive on a magna and after doing osme figures they are cheaper to insure adn run than a commodore or falcon.
Thanks again.

Another question,
might sound dumb but bare with me.
If I got the auto in question and the box shit itself and needed a recondition, how easy or how much would it cost to maybe replace the auto with a 5spd manual in such an event?
Would it be worth while??

From memory when this query was raised previously - the auto to manual conversion on a magna is worth about 4K in parts alone!! If you can source a manual box that is - rear as rocking horse poop!!
But I can't help on the cost of an auto re-condition as I have never done it!!

well a replacement / recon box will set you back about $2000ish from mitsubishi as a geniune recon box..
but as long as you look after it and dont mistreat it then you shouldnt have a problem
