Speaker system where the woofer and tweater are seperate. look on howstuffworks.

As was said a split system comprisies of two (or more) speakers usually a tweeter and midrange. They also come with passive crossovers (non powered).
Why do you want these over coaxials (speakers that have the tweeter mounted in the woofer)?
Well as high frequencies are very directional it is important to have these frequencies pointed directly at the listeners ears to give good stereo reproduction. The stock speaker locations in most cars do not point directly at our ears, so by having a seperate tweeter which is quite easy to mount we can point the tweeter at our ears whilst still having the woofer in the stock location.

Although it is still important to point the midbass woofers at our ears, the lower the frequency the harder it is for our ears to pinpoint the location.

If you buy splits the best spot to mount your tweeter is as close as possible to the woofer (to avoid separation) and pointing at the listeners ears. (also mount them as far away from both listeners as this reduces the path difference also equating to better stereo imaging)
Split systems also allow you to customise what tweeter/midrange combination you want. It is important (but not vital) to run these through a separate amplifier as your headunit will not put out enough to do them justice.

Split systems can come in 2 way, 3 way and 4 way packages. Usually the simpler the better. Unless you have thousands of dollars and equalisers etc.

Your best bet is a simple two way setup.

Peace

Tim

yeah fairly easy
i used a dremel to cut out the speaker holes
the crossover was just 2 screws
but the pain was routing the speaker wires through the origonal loom
that the central door locking wires go through
all up took 1 hour to put the speakers in ]
and 45 min to wire up (door loom incuded)
take the time to do a neat job you'll Appreciate it

Nah, those caps come off, it was a piece of cake, popped them out drilled small holes in the centre, stuck em down and popped them back in... I am almost ashamed of how easy it was  lol

mmmm, i'm a wannabe audiophile, even tho i am a bass junkie at the same time....
i mounted my splits like that person who posted up their door earlier in this thread...the closer the tweeter is to the woofer and lower down into the door the better it is. Thats why people build custom door pods. umm, yeah, have fun, remember to spend more than 500 dollars :P

ok well i haven't got $500 for some splits. sorry
and the speaker position was inspired by all of the late modle cars that i detail
where in all of the cars the tweeter was seperated from the woofer
