Hi all, just need to know what the going rates are these day's to fix the noisy timing chain's that seem to be customary to magna's. Mine (TP carby) has done 306,000klm's, has a new head, I think the last timing chain and oil pump were replaced not so long ago (25,000klm's) but this timing chain is already on its way out. What causes these to go so quickly, mine is only rattling at idle very faintly and then is a little louder at 2000rpm but then goes away.
Also, my car is carby and seems to go better than some examples that I have driven, but I am experiencing a huge surge in power at 3500rpm. I seem to be lacking a lot of power down low but I have a lot of torque instead, the surge gets so bad it's like a laggy turbo with an on/off power delivery, in the wet I get wheelspin on the change from 2nd to 3rd?
Just want smooth power delivery, maybe a dodgy vaccum line? Any Idea's.

im thinkin 500ish mark
make sure when u get it done that they change the timing chain and also the chain for balance shaft/oil pump. Also make sure they replace the tensioners for the chain.
at those sorta k's might as well look at getting a recon motor maybe

hey how good are you with a spanner? quotes are around 500-800 for timing chains replacement but get a new oil pump from repco for about 150... take it to a machine shop and have them put a bronze sleeve in it to fit the chain tensioner and vavoom no more chain probs!!! done it on the weekend to a friends car.. got the idea off the forums. also a friend of mine had it done 100ks ago no probs yet... seems to be the fix .. doing my car again but full rebuild soon ... let you know how it goes.. hope this helps
cheers

I don't think its a mechanical problem man. Its just the way the engine was built. The huge stroke of the astron is good for low down torque but is seemingly absent at the higher rev range. Mostly between 2500-4400rpm is the largest power flat spot.

I had a TP magna, sold it a couple months back...mine rattled from the day i got it......I was informed that it is not the actual timing chain itself that wears out so quickly - it is the chain tensioner that gives up - mine only rattled on warm starts when the engine has been left sitting for a short period, if i started it more than say 5 hours after switching off...it wouldnt rattle....and it NEVER rattled on a cold start

I have good pull from 1200-3000 then nothing till 4000-4500? Dunno, just dont like taking it out to 5000 everytime i want a little performance, it will hang on in 4th gear up really steep hills from about 2000, but if i wanna pull away i have to nearly go back to 2nd to get good power. But when it does come on properly its violent and torque steers madly?

Check the secondary release dashpot, they are often faulty over time and the secondary butterfly wont open
