Hi Team,

A project I've always wanted to do was to fit an injected Toyota 4AGE with a 5 speed into an Escort as a toy (personalised plate Escota?). The 4AGE is just an improved BDA and I think it would go like the proverbial cut cat.

However, I've bin doin' some more thunkin'.

What about a rear wheel drive V3000/Magna? Has anyone tried this?

Same engine but turn it 90 degrees (the V6 that is, not a 4AGE!!!). A rear wheel drive 5 speed shouldn't be a problem as the engine itself is used in quite a few rwd vehicles in the States (so I believe). The modified rear axle from a Falcon or Holden maybe(?).

I know anything is possible but is this realistic? I'm not talking about certification (yet), just the engineering side.

It'll be lots of work I know. So what do you all think???

rear end would be an absolute pain in the ass, it would need to be a fully custom job. Equally bad in the pain in the ass stakes will be the firewall. There isnt enough room to fit a rear drive gearbox in their as their is no transmition tunnel and the firewall comes down too low. Its probably possible if you wanna build a race car.. but a road car?? no way, you would never get it registered

hey if u can do it, it would be awesome to see a magna doing donuts.

alot of people dont even know that magnas are front wheel drive

Also where would u get a diff and gearbox and god knows what else for this kind of project??
might be easier to just get a rwd engine/driveline setup and squeeze it into the magna i thinks.

Stock I don't think there would be enough room in the engine bay to turn the engine NR, also the gearbox would be a problem, however you could fit 4wd, which could be a possibility and then just remove the front driveshafts, thus leaving the engine in it's original position. Not the strongest most sound option but possible, a few mods would be needed an a new fuel tank.

now that would be a seious mod

I cant see why it couldn't be done, and why it couldn't be engineered...... would be a bit of work though..... you'd have to cut and paste a rwd transmission tunnel from another car. There's probably enough room in the back for a diff as the 2nd gens dont have independant rear......

I've had some real wacky things engineered before, as long as you involve an engineer from the planning stages it should be ok.....

My old 4wd was engineered with every suspension mount/link modified, shocks moved, crossmembers moved, driveshafts shortened and lengthened, recaros, 35" tyres, 8" lift, custom engine mounts, custom power steering and a motor with probably 3 times the power of the original.... all signed off easy cos the engineered told us what we needed to do before we started.....

Not sure if the older tritons that ran a 2.6 astron had a V6 model/option, but I know that the newer tritons ran the 3rd gen (TE+) 6g72 V6 in a RWD (and 4WD in some models) configuration.

We have a couple of these tritons at work, they have different intake manifolds to suit the longitudinal engine mounting, and some of the ancilaries are mounted in slightlly different positions to accomodated clearences. Seeing as though you would have to make whole new custom engine mounts and brakets, perhaps you could use this engine and driveline combination.

The only issue with this running gear (if you got it to fit) is that the gearing is pretty low and in standard form these engines are cam'ed to produce torque earlier in the rev range and therefore have a lower peak power/torque output compared to the Magna.

Otherwise I'm sure everyone had dreamt of a RWD Magna monster lol

Just get an AWD and remove the front diff.

Just get an AWD and remove the front diff.

I don't think that would be possible Redav, as the front diff is part of the gearbox. Such as the Lancer.

japanese and other countries have their TR's (Diamantes) AWD stock.
plus the DOHC v6 engine etc...

Gerard is right, i know NZ diamante's are DOHC AND AWD's, you could always see if the old sigma(rwd) gear would fit, but maybe only for the 4 cylinder. You could grab a diamante for wrecking and steal the gear out of that, i'm sure there'd be a way.

Well, yeah but you've got better potential working with an existing layout and hardware than starting from scratch.

can be done - but its not as easy as just dropping the front shafts...

what you could do is send your g'box away to a gearbox speciallist to see if they can remove all links to the front drive axle's...... again - anything is possible.... ahhh... the lotto this saturday would be nice :D

now, i didnt tell you this, but a person inside mmal has been keen on the developments of my car, and they have 5 test manual awd's..... mod the manual awd box and youd' be laughing your ass off.
