View Full Version : Timing belt been done; how to tell?
Recently bought a TF V6 with 155,000km on it. There's no evidence in the logbook that the timing belt has been done yet. It's incomplete, though it does have a Mitsu dealer stamp on the 120k service. Not that that means anything.
Obviously I don't want it snapping and lunching my engine, but then I don't really want to fork out $500 to get it done unnecessarily, either!
If I pull the belt covers off, is there much indication on the belts themselves as to whether they're 50k old or 150k old?
Any other ways to tell?

Ring up the mistu dealer and give them ur number plate... They'll tell you everything that was done there. i think it's meant to be done at 100k service, so possible they did the lot at the 120k mark. Just tell them you recently bought the car and you want the history.

You could tell by the colour of it... like obviously being black but slightly brown and see if it has a bit of slack... with i replaced mine it mad a huge difference to the economy and performance... i bought the car with 160 000 kms on the clock.... noting that the belt was the original from factory... so says my mechanic.... it was supposed to be replaced at 100 000 kms... scarey hey.....

Wouldn't the new belt provided in the genuine Mitsubishi spare parts belt kit be identical to what parts they use on a new engine??
So a 'replaced' belt would look the same as the original factory-installed item... unless its really missing huge chunks, it would be hard to tell how old it is.
I rang them up and they were very helpful. They said that the service in question was the 90k service (performed at 115k) and they did indeed change the timing belt.
Let's hope they're telling the truth ;-)

If in doubt, throw it out.
If the belt has been changed it should be listed int he service book.
The paint on the belt will be fairly new looking and "Bright" if it is not all that old.

i know this is a little bit off topic, but instead of starting a new thread, how much have you guys paid to have your timing belts replaced? i just had my 75,000km service done and i got the belt done then and it cost me $550....does that sound right? i hope i didnt get ripped off :|
