View Full Version : Vented Brake Rotors
broke

Hi Everyone,
I have always wanted to get some nice looking brake rotors for my TH. Because I have rims that have a large gap inbetween spokes you can see ALOT of the brake caliper and rotors. Is is possible to get a vented rotor that will just slide on inplace of the stock rotor? Or will i be looking at a complete brake upgrade? Also does the stock brake setup support larger rotors? :D
Any help appreaciated

Hey Mate,
The stock setup doesnt support larger brake rotors, however, if you can get your hands on a set of AWD front rotors and calipers, you have yourself a very nice brake upgrade. Im not sure when slotted rotors will be available, if not already for the AWD, but thats what i intend to do. Buy the calipers from a wreckers, and then get the slotted rotors from a brake and clutch dhop.

You could always do what Tbutcher has done and some others Brembo brakes or there is this

There is a thread of a company having brembo brakes for our magnas.

Since no-one else was kind enough to answer your first question.... I will.
DBA make slotted or slotted/drilled rotors which are a direct replacement for the factory magna rotors. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than upgrading the entire braking system - because as stated before, the stock brake setup will not support either upgrading to bigger rotors or twin pot calipers.
I've attached a pic of what my DBA 'gold' X-drilled/slotted rotors look like on the front. Definetly an improvement over stock in both looks and performance - although not enough of a performance improvement if you plan to turbo or SC in my opinion.
Search for a topic in the for sale section detailing a group buy of DBA brake products organised by PhilsTH which took place late last year - it details the part numbers for all the different magna models/DBA products.

Ahh the stock brake setup will support twin pot calipers from the AWD/Ralliart Magna as a direct bolt on mod. In turn, you will need to get the bigger rotors to handle the different calipers.

excellent! thanks everyone for your help!
Also a bit off topic, Autobarn here in Townsville informed me that a panel K&N will be better, and easier to install than the really nice one's most of the people here have installed? Being the rounded one's. Haha sorry I'm very new to engine modifications :D

And just to be really finicky, you should already have "vented" discs on your fronts. That is if you were to take your disk off and look at it from the side, you'd see that is is kind of hollow.
Slotted is where there are grooves across the surface. As well as helping to cool the disc a lot faster, this also has a "cleaning" action on the pads.
Cross drilled is where there are holes drilled across the surface.
Sayeth the Preacher man who has an entirely stock brake setup.

I'm looking at getting some DBA4000 Series (XS - Premium cross-drilled and slotted) Performance Rotors for my Ralliart :D
According to the DBA catalogue these should fit given the Ralliart has the same brake setup (rotor size etc) as the AWD.
http://www.dba.com.au/dba_catalogue_2004/HTML/pdf/Out/Mitsubishi.pdf
Not sure what pads to get yet, was thinking maybe Bendix Ultimates as i've heard that there are issues when using EBC pads and DBA rotors?

Well, if you want EBC pads, you could go EBC or RDA rotors.

The sizes are indeed the same, fronts seem OK, however the rear brakes use a different handbrake set up in the drum. Are the rears interchangeable? That's the $64000 question.
I put this to DBA directly to see if they were, they could not catagoricaly say other than the Ralliart had no listing in their catalogue or any reference to the AWD as being the same. (this may have been reviewed by now as it went to the engineers in Sydney for resolution).
I also got the part numbers from Mitsu for AWD: MR 128661 and Ralliart: MR 926020 rears and the're different.
It comes down to someone taking a punt(lot of $) or getting together with an AWD and swapping rotors. Anyone work at mitsu here that can possibly get the 2 side by side and compare.
If you do find out or anyone out there fitted AWD rear slotted to Ralliart let us know.
Sorry to go off track a bit but hate to see someone get caught out when lots of $ involved.

Oh, I missed this point...

Well, that's not correct. Ralliart and AWD rotors aren't going to be interchangeable.
Where's my $64000?

Ahh well, even if the rears can't be done ... it's the fronts that do most of the stopping work anyways. *shrug*
Guess I'll just have to wait until I hear back from DBA themselves to clear this up.

Don't get me wrong, you can do it, I have but it's not simple.

Hi I'm new to this forum and seeing this thread was wondering if any one can answer my question which is similar to the orginators one as I have a modified 99TH.
Basically I already have the DBA cross drilled and slotted brakes front and rear, but want to improve the braking.
I noticed on the RPW website they can offer a brake upgrade being -
"(B) Front brakes - medium to extreme levels of braking.
Fitment of upgraded front disc callipers to twin pot callipers, slotted and dimpled front rotor with EBC Kevlar brake pads no modifications required. Great improvement in brake for no major changes
Fitment of EBC Black Stuff rear brake pads - for improved efficiency.
This is a great upgrade on the vehicle and improves braking by an easy 20% immediately. No need to change brake master cylinder or any other components. Simply drive in and drive out with better brakes."
Has anyone done this or looked into it as late last year I asked mechanic to find out and he told me that he could get them for about $600 fitted, but he has never orderred them in.
I understand that they fit the twin calipers from a awd magna to the standard rotors and fittings on the existing rotors. It sound simlar to the vt to vn commodore conversation.
If this is the case can I order these calaipers directly form a mitsubishi dealer or get second hand ones and refurnish them.
Thanks

I and a few others have done something very similar. I'm not sure where he get's his parts from but we've sourced AWD front calipers from wreckers. They are a straight swap.

I wouldn't fit the calipers to the existing rotors. Buying them new from Mitsu is expensive so scour the wreckers.

FYI, RPW don't use the AWD parts. I can't tell you what vehicle they are from (cos I don't know) but I asked David once and he confirmed they weren't AWD parts.
I believe they're reconditioned 2nd hand items too.. at least the twin pot callipers he supplies with the brake upgrade that uses the larger 294mm disks are reconditioned. But if you're going to get parts from a wreckers anyway, I can't see that mattering.
294mm is the diameter of the AWD/Ralliart front disks isn't it?

Yup. I suspect that the ones he uses might be old Evo ones that have been traded in as an upgrade for something better.
