How the hell do I replace them? They look like they are probably 4" speakers, up in tht top of the dash. Do I need to remove the whole dash, if so, how!?

Thanks!
Ben.

Is this in a TM / TP??

Generally people just disconnet them and put a set of 6" splits in the doors...

It's a 1989 SE... it's a friends, so I'm not too sure on the model designation.

Problem is, he already has 4" speakers he'd like to use. Finding somewhere solid/suitable to mount them is proving difficult - that's why I was hoping to use the factory location.

Any ideas?

Ben.

Nah sorry dude i have never replaced them, but if you shoot down to your local raa, or library you can probably look in the service manual and find out - otherwise i seem to remember theres a tm service manual on ebay for about $10 or soemthing...

good luck.

u don't need to pull out the whole dash, the top of the dash is held in by clips, i just used three flat screw drivers as levers. the air vents don't need to be removed as they are attached underneath to the bit u r removing. when u've lifted it from the clips, just pull it out.

they are 4 inch speakers, tho only held in by 2 screws. u'd need to modify normal 4 inch speakers by cutting them to fit them in, pain in the arse really. oh yeh, if u do decide to replace 'em make sure the new ones aren't to deep first

Correct just remove the top of the dash, these are held in by clips but are also held in by a wingnut which you have to take the glove box out, remove the heater pipe behind there and reach up till you feel the wingnut. Also you will only have approx 30 - 35mm depth to fit the speakers into and the majority of speakers (quality ones that is) around today are between 40-45mm. I am currently changing the interior of my car ( and converting to EFI) and my dash is sitting out. if ya want i can take some pics of where the speakers go

if you could post some of that here that would be sweet. i'd especially like to know about the EFI conversion stuff as i have a carby TP sedan (and it kinda needs efi, or i need to make it run on ethanol so i can buy cheap safeway plus petrol :D )

i have to replace my front speakers as well and i don't want to cut up the doors (not unless i can buy some elite doors with power windows/locks anyway, which i might just do...... :) )

Hi everybody,
I just found this website and it's awesome!!
Anyway, you dudes are right about removing the dash cover. I added a bit of vaseline to the clips to make them easier to pull out next time round.
I tried and wasted two sets of speakers trying to replace the factory ones in the dash. Unless you can find a shallow speaker, there's no way to get them into the dash unless you cut through the air duct (like my friend). Problem with that, is you lose the use of the control knob on the side of the duct. What I done instead was to mount the 4" speakers up in the footwell. I've still kept the wires handy in the dash as one day I might mount Tweeters in there instead. They're small and provide great staging for any SQ system.

That's what I done and it works just fine.

ive replaced the front speakers in my TM SE. the new kenwoods were fair bit deeper. all i did was part the air duct under them and slid the new speakers in. although air continually flows in through the side air vents, i thought it was a pretty neat idea anyway considering my aircon is not working at the moment and it is so damn hot up here in north qld haha.

1 BIG hint though, make sure they are firm in place and SOLDER the wires 2gether. i didnt solder the wires properly and now my left front speaker cuts out sometimes wen i take a corner fast :(

Did any one measure the depth of the speakers while u had them out?

Epic thread mine!

That aside, a previous member fit 44.3mm deep speakers in Link (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17850) so I'd say something in that ballpark figure would fit. Only one way to find out though.

anyway for the air ducts carnt u just cut them so u have enough to reconect them with some flexable hose and a couple of clamps

the air ducts will pull apart. as putting flexy hose never tried. left sould be easy. right hand no idea. some poeple have put speaker under the dash. depends how much volume you need.
