Hey guys... last night I forgot to turn off my driving lights when I parked my car. Needless to say when I returned to my car the battery was very dead. I got a jump start and everything is working fine, except for the head unit. It won't turn on at all. Usually when it is turned off I still get a little red light indicating that there is power going to the unit but I don't even get that! I'm no expert in auto electrics but this seems to indicate that somehow in the jumpstart / flat battery process I blew the fuse?
Any ideas?
Cheers guys,
Horgz

did'nt u know that any car from early 90's till now shouldnt be jump started coz this will giv u trouble in electronic parts of your car.

Check the fusebox/your car audio fuses....
Shouldn't be anything too serious.
Might be better putting this thread in car audio. Holla Mods

It sounds like a fuse to me.
Check the Interior light, cigarette and stereo fuses, and replace, if necessary.
(Fuses are located in the driver footwell and under the bonnet, next to the battery. Use the manual that came with your car, if you are unsure how to change them. Make sure all of the replacement fuses match their original rating, 15A, 25A, 35A, etc)

Ummm... Nah its perfectly alright to jump start them; thats why we use jumper leads with 'anti-zap' protection, and don't use a dodgy brand either.

Eh? So how are you supposed to get your car going if you have a flat battery? The RAC have no problem jump starting your car if you call them out!

most likely the fuse, we had the exact same problem some idiot jump started our car and blew the fuse. Mistubishi dealer couldnt identify the problem and wanted to remove the radio and send it to the factory at a cost of $200!. Took it to a car audio dude and it was a simple fuse blown cost us nothing. Enough said about car dealers.

They use isolated power to jump start your vehicle. See those portable 12v starter packs with two leads with alligator crimps on the end when you're at your local automotive store? Well that's basically what they have in their van.
By the way, do you have an original head unit? If so, is there any display on the screen?

It'll be a fuse for sure, especially if everything else works. Check the fuses on your HU (should be at the back, the little coloured see-through things). If they look black they've blown. Also i dont know about on later models but my model has a fuse on the HU power wire which can blow also, i'd check that as well.

Ahh righto... I have an aftermarket head unit (JVC). There's no display on the screen at all. There is no power to the unit as far as I can tell.

Umm.. the car still drives. All other electrical devices are still working. Head lights, aircon, power windows etc etc. I doubt I have "killed" the battery. Or at least I would like to think so :-)

Well first things first, check your fuses, including the one on the headunit.
Any other equipment that you found to be "dead" at the same time?
Once you've isolated its not the fuse, grab a multimeter/voltmeter and start checking your electrical harness on your head unit to make sure you are actually getting power through it.

your battery doesnt 'die' if its been drained out. it just needs to be recharged, so a few long trips would do it well... The only way a battery can die is if its off poor quality or it is old overused and/or underused.
Also, like everyone said, most probably a fuse, the current has to go through at least 2 fuses before it gets to the ehad unit. One in the fusebox somewhere, and one on the head unit somewhere. check it out.
good luck

Id say when you stuffed around with the battery you forgot to connect the new power cable that was installed for the HU. alot of people put new power to battery i say thats it or you have thrown the fuse on the back of the deck...
If not see if there is power in the lines at the rear of the deck.. need a test light..
If so its the deck if not you arent getting power...
Eliminate the odds one by one and you will get your answers...

As if that's the problem?? It's gotta be more complicated than that...What are you stupid?
Why don't you do us all a favour and go away?

you have to connect to negative jump lead to the engine
According to my car manual (user. not maintainance) the -ve cable being attached to car car being "jumped" needs to be connected to the engine block or chassis, NOT the -ve terminal of the battery. That's the only warning given.
