I have some questions on the Alpine S series of speakers.
I was wondering if i was to get some, :

SPS-171A Type-S 6-1/2" Component 2 Way Speaker
SPS-690A Type-S 6" x 9" 3-Way Speaker
2x SWS-1242D Type-S 12" Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer (4Ohm + 4Ohm)

would they compliment each other and sound alright as a whole.

I would also like some help on a suitable Alpine head unit for the system (because I would like to play mp3 cd's) and some serious amp-age to power the whole lot?

Any ideas???

I know a good alpine amp to power your subs would be the

MRD-1000 - 1000watt rms

A good head unit from alpine would be either 9833 or 9835 both are very good.

These are some choices in just alpine and im sure there are many other brands out there.
I dunno if they complement each other but they prolly do as they are alpine, though others might think otherwise.

I wanna get some splits soon and ill be looking into the alpine range as well and they seem, like they are good as the prices on some are.

Do those Alpine speakers compliment eachother?

1) Does a bear shi* in the woods?
2) Does a one legged duck swim in circles?
3) Do seagulls like chips!?

Yes, Yella; they are extremly compatible together and are one of the best brands to decide from. Go for it.

Also source a headunit on aussie eBay.

Bought myself an Alpine 9835 for $620 shipped to my door with insurance...

I know a good alpine amp to power your subs would be the

MRD-1000 - 1000watt rms

Now I don't usually jump on too many things but that comment cannot go unhighlighted. The MRD-1000 (inc the MRD-1001) amplifier is not a 1000watt RMS amp. The specs of it are:

1000W x 1 RMS [2Ohms @ 14.4V (1% THD)]
500W x 1 RMS [4Ohms @ 14.4V (1% THD)]
700W x 1 RMS [2Ohms @ 12V (1% THD)]
350W x 1 RMS [4Ohms @ 12V (1% THD)]

Now most cars run at 13.5-13.7volts. Running at 4ohms, the MRD-1000 is a 440 watt RMS amplifier and with a THD of 1%, not a very good sounding one at that.

Now I'm well aware that there are many other tangents I have not explored such as what RMS is actually all about but for this basic point I'll spare everyone the thesis. ;)

Yella, on the subject of speakers make sure you audition as many brands as you can dude. Make a choice based on what speakers you like. Other brands to look into besides Alpine (such as dedicated speaker manufacturers) include:

Image Dynamics
www.imagedynamicsusa.com

RE Audio
www.reaudio.com.au

Diamond Audio
www.diamondaudio.com

Phoenix Gold
www.phoenixgold.com

Digital Designs

Boston Acoustics

Vibe

Focal

Hertz
www.hertzaudiovideo.com

Morel
www.morel.co.il

Eton
www.etongmbh.com

DynAudio

Now of course it's just my suspicion but you might find more enjoyment in these speakers. ;)

As your in Vic (Melbourne area?) check out Gary's Car Audio in Preston as they specialize in alpine gear, and they will give you a very good deal. They also have PG, Focal and fusion gear which is all very good. I would probably go Type-R splits at the front, especially if your getting a good (RRP $700+) headunit. Assuming you have a TE or beyond, 6x9s for rear fill are the way to go, unless you dont mind the speakers not fitting properly.

6x9's in the back is the way to go, you already have the holes for them. Some minor metalwork may be required to make then fit properly, the OEM speakers have a rather narrow basket. I just bashed it out a bit with a hammer after I found a hacksaw slow and ineffective!

There's nothing WRONG with the Alpines quality, there is better quality on the market though. I only go for Alpine as I can get them without going to Sydney (near 800km round trip for me). I have listened to Bostons, Hertz and Focals, both are very nice sounding speakers, yet are more expensive. I was also impressed with the JBL speakers for the price - I think they are great value. The 6.5" splits I auditioned absolutely THUMPED! They RRP for the $260ish mark.

For most things, Alpines will be fine. All depends on what you want to spend. And when your mates only have crappy Kenwood speakers, yours will still sound a million dollars in comparison, even if some people on here think you should have gone with another brand.

Some people think keeping all the same brand helps, some say mix and match the best possible components together regardless of brand. It's your choice, but as Genocide says, keeping all the one series of one brand will give you a good result, and you will be happy, although you may be happier with a different combination.

Thanks for all of your help, i will look around a bit and hear what other brands have to offer, and i will be making that trip down to Preston very soon.

Your help is most appreciated.

Yeah try and steer away from just buying for a brand... Esp when ur not buying a dedicated speaker brand or dedicated sub brand etc...

Alpine is renowned for their Good source processing. Headunits are very high quality... And their older amps are top notch.

IMO I wouldn't say their speakers and subs are near the quality of their processors. I personally dont like the type s gear compared to dyns, focals, diamond, morel etc... Companies that are renowned for their speakers.

If you're making a sponsored show car... go for it. if you want something that sounds good and is good value for money/ good bang for your buck. Put some more thought into what you want to purchase.

Peace

Tim
