Well...I was just looking at the K & N site, and as you will notice down the bottom it says they are illegal for normal cars.....is this true for Australia?

http://knfilters.com/universal/universal.htm

These filters are legal ONLY for racing vehicles. Not applicable, nor intended for use on emission controlled street or highway vehicles.

I think they are illegal unless in a fully sealed box. Feel free to correct me anyone?

Cheers

I don't know for certain but there are a lot of cars here in NZ that use pods so I'd be surprised if they were illegal here as they would get picked up when the car goes in for a warrant (every 6 months here).

Anyway, why would they be illegal if they are fitted corrected? That's weird aye.

Possibly another "only in the US of A story".

I think it depends on the state. Mines been engineered down the bottom passenger corner of the bumber. Its not in a sealed box, and yes it has been inspected and passed. I am in the ACT.

Also ... isn't the idea of an intake to drag air in ... howsit do that if its fully sealed !! :bowrofl: ** jokes **

That said I am planning on relocating the battery to the boot, and putting the pod in a box where the battery is currently. The reason is puddles ... I am sick of being extremely careful when it rains ;)

I was pulled over last night (just random, wasnt speeding or being stupid), I have a fully exposed HKS pod and the fella said nothing, no ticket, no nothing - sent me on my way with a smile on his face.

I thought they were illegal in QLD, or maybe he didnt want to write me out a ticket? who knows

I think it depends on how their moods are coz ive seen some cars been checked under the hood in sunnybank like last yr coz the car has bonnet scoop ( aftermarket) and i ask some guys there and they said that some cops does that specially those with scoop and many of them had been warned about the pods but they nver took it off n e way

My car was checked by the RTA twice last night  and i have a monster pod.. no problems at all

I think it has to be secured properly and yuor emissions have to still be present

Thats in QLD

Actually it all depends on the state individual laws. In Victoria you are only allowed 1 Aftermarket intake modification. That includes aftermarket POD's and Intercoolers (inc piping). Since few of us need to worry about intercoolers, POD's are perfectly legal in VIC for most magnas

P.S I have a friend who has both mods (POD & intercooler) and was told by the EPA to fix one

i think it depends on State and sometime the cops as well, because i used to have a Saab turbo and had a pod filter fitted and it was not enclosed, but when the cops opened the bonnet he just looked and said nothing. it think it depends on the car they are looking at as well.

If you change anything on the car from standard a police officer has power to sticker your car. This includes Suspension, steering wheel changes, rim sizes, tachos mounted.

If you are going to stress about a pod filter dont bother moding your cars at all really.

It is not a state by state thing or a police/road authorities thing at all.

This has been discussed in length in the forums previously

The Oiled pod is illegal to use in all states as far as an EPA standpoint due to the oil it is lubricated with letting of uncontrolled amounts of hydrocarbons.

Most police will not worry about them depending on the police involved.

If it is in a sealed box this means that the box mist take air in one end and release air to the engine at the other end thus the hydrocarbons do not enter the atmosthere rather than be burnt in the combustion.

A non oiled fileter can be used externally.

Why people use them without a cai is a bit baffling as they just draw very hot and thin air from the very hot engine bay. In a CAI setup they can be very beneficial.

There is the soarer site where the guy who runs it is an engineer, a PHD of some sort, he has done dyno tests with many different set ups on the same car and had some surprising results.

Only if that mod is deemed illegal by the state or federal laws, ie if lowered and the suspension is not altered by more than 1/3rd and the ground clearance is still over 100mm then he/she will have a very hard time justifying it later.

A lot of the time it is the attitude of the driver that does not help, even if the police are bieng hard assed a simple yes sir will often go a long way even if agains the grain

You can always go the the public relations dept later and complain as I have a few times.

Yeh as far as i am aware pods are fine if they are in an enclosed box. I dunno if my CAI is illegal though, it's just a pipe from the bottom of my airbox to the bottom of my bumper.
