ok heres the deal, in about 2 years my contract with australia post will be up, i will (hopefully) be finnished uni and have a job somewhere in the financial planning or maybe even banking trade. If all goes to plan, my pay should atleast be significantly more then what it currently is (which wouldnt be friggin hard!! :doubt:) so i should be able to afford to start a bit of a project car :)
I thought about doing something a bit different and working on my current car, which is a TL wagon, but i am moving against that now as i really wanna do an AWD. I am thinking about replacing the wagon with a TL VR AWD, hopefully by then their will be a decent bodykit out to improve that bloody nose!!
Anyway now down to the questions i wanna ask you guys. firstly, i know this has been done before, but i have done a search and cant find the answer im after. Why isactly cant you put anything higher then 16" wheels on an AWD?? and is it possible to fix this? maybe you just need an engineers report to say it works??? i really want atleast 18's, but preferably 19's!
i will probably end up supercharing the thing, either with the sprintex kit, or the RPW kit which they are currently developing, mainly for costs reasons. However if i find that i can afford it, my ultimate dream would to do a twin turbo setup. My main concern with this is that of space. Is there going to be space in the engine bay to do a twin turbo setup, considering that the AWD running gear will significantly reduce the amount of room i would have to play with?? i have been running this problem through my head and i am really starting to think that supercharging would be a whole lot easier... :doubt:
last question is, considering the 5spd auto in the AWD's is the same unit that is found in the american version of the lancer EVO, does this mean that the 5spd manual gearbox from the lancer EVO should theoretically fit?? Its just that this thing will hopefully produce BIG power, probably too much for the auto unless the internals get significant strengthening. I am thinking that if its possible, it would be money better spent fitting a manual to the car, rather then upgrading the auto
Anyway if anyone can answer those questions that'd be great. Also if you have any ideas for me please feel free to kick them around. I know its probably a little bit hard to take this thread seriously considering that all of this would be a minimum 2 years away before i can even come close to starting, but hey, if i end up doing this its gonna cost heaps! so i gotta start saving soon!!!
cheers

yer, i never got a straight answer on this either... BUT - have a closer look at that spintex AWD article... the magna in the pic has a) 18" rims and b) has been lowered! its not standard height... so this may be a hint as that you may beable to dump em on large wheels. id imagine if there was still problems they'd get ironed out in the next year or so in the TW and the new magna platform.

it didnt stop me from moving the stock snorkel and the battery to the boot... maybe not quite a "twin turbo" - but you can still pulll a booya job and do up one hell of a Single T (which would prolly be better then a Twin T anyway.. look at all those Twin Turbo Supras.. the ones pulling the chronic HP are single T88's  )

your wasting your time trying to pull of another auto-manual conversion... some people just dont get it.. instead of spending upper of 5grand (asylum) actually prolly more cos its an AWD box (say 7grand) and thats if it goes together smoothly, why not spend 7grand for a set of custom cut and revised ratio gears...(www.ppgearbox.com.au) based in adelaide, could create a custom dog box for my manual for under 8grand, which makes it a syncro box + straight cut gears. If you got this done to to a Auto, no manual would come close to its shifting time... a worked AUTO would own everyone except the eleite of manual drivers. even then, if you had one hell of a powerplant - that manual car would need to be able to keep up with your power/weight not outright power. AUTO WOULD be the way to go in damn damn dammed high power cars... and you can still eat a McFlurry while driving on the way to work

i once told my mates that i was going to do up a magna, paint it gold with a turbo - they just laughed... now whos laughing.

I thought twin turbo's where better because they spooled up quicker or something?? ill admit i dont know a whole lot abot turbo's, just what mates have told me. I know more about supercharging really..

Would it be possible to make the box so while its left in position D, it shifts like a normal auto, and doesnt thump it into gears too harshley, and then when you move the shifter over the the manual slot, the thing becomes basically fully sequential?? The reason i ask is i have been in a commodore with a worked gearbox, and every shift thumps your guts out and would be a pain to drive every day, but if i could have it so that when i put it in D it would just drive like a relitively normal auto that would be great. Im thinking this would require maybe two shift paterns being programed into the ECU??

damn good point!

Pretty sure this is possible even without toughening up the internals of the box. There was a thread on here recently discussin the fact that shiftkits.com.au are currently developing shift kits for 3rd gen magnas. From reading their website - they offer a couple of different options - the dearer basicly has a 3 position switch from memory. First position is standard shifts (ie: factory), second & third positions are basically varying degrees of shift firmness.
From memory - these kits are designed to be plugged straight into a stock auto box to improve shift times. I'd imagine it wouldnt be hard to adjust the firmness to suit a box that has had it's internal toughened up.
Like booya said - give me a stage 2 auto box (stronger internals/clutch plate + adjustable shift firmness) over a 5 or even 6sp manual anyday.

cheers mate, sound promising
new idea, why use the VR model, when i could go for luxury as well as performance and get an AWD verada GTV :D
oh god this is gonna cost alot of money....

the reason they only come out with 16 is because of the rear knuckle for the all wheel drive system kept fouling on the rims

slyfox had his TL VR AWD lowered on 18's without any problems apparently

Might also be worth searching the topic for posts by TButcher - he's running 21's or 22's on an AWD Diamante.
I've definetly seen him post some details of how he went about it, but when it comes time and you need specific details I'm sure he'd be able to help if you asked him directly.

he's running "just" 20s
the diamante has a different suspension setup to the Oz spec stuff...
