View Full Version : Freeway RPM?

Hey,

How many revs does your 3rd gen manual sit on when in top gear (5th) on the freeway. mine sits on about 3,000 RPM @ 110 - 115km. is that normal? most commodores i've owned sit on 2200 - 2600 rpm at those speeds.

Cheers

I think it's because of the higher gear ratios - not something to really be worried about.

I dont have a manual.

But my 3ltr Auto does just under 2550rpm doing 105-110.

the 3.5L boxes had revisted ratios over the 3L boxes.

longer 1,2,3, equal 4th then a lengthened 5th.

My 2002 with 4spd tippy - the tacho needle is just hitting 2,000rpm at 105km/h in 4th. Or about 5,500rpm at 100km/h in 2nd  .

My 3.5L manual sits around 2700rpm on 5th doing 110km/h, my dad's Commodore sits at 1800rpm doing 110km/h. I wasn't too happy about this, my reason for getting a V6 was so that I could cruise with lower rev's compared to my old Astron 2.6. As someone said before, it has to do with the gear ratios, the manual's 5th gear ratio is taller then the auto's, and the Commodore's high gear was built for cruising, so its even lower again.

well, then the TJ must have a different DIFF ratio... how can a 3L vs 3.5L have a 500rpm difference in the latter.

Tim-E
01-02-2005, 07:40 AM
when my TE 3L manual hits 3000rpm in 5th, its doing 117km/h.

I thought something was wrong with that when i first got the car too. But it does make for easy overtaking when it pulls hard without dropping back a gear

Where is the 500rpm difference? My 5 speed sits around the same point as RustySpoon and my03vrx.

Here's some more speeds.

Ok it seems it's quite normal. I should have been more specific, i have a TH 3 litre ...and its at 3,000 rpm wen i sit on about 118 (on 110 freeway, in SA they cant get you for speeding until or 10+ ubove the limit).

My fourth gear is very weird, likes to stay at real low rpm.

1750rpm @ ~80km
1900rpm @ ~100km
2000rpm @ ~117km

Auto ofcourse, god, those high ratio's..

Do you manual guys get loud cabin noise ?
Whats the fuel consumption difference on highway driving between the two?

My lukeys a ***** at around 2000-2600rpm so thats why I ask about cabin noise ESP with zorst..

My cabin noise is nice and quiet, but don't forget I only have a stock muffler. In fact that is part of the reason why I havn't got a hi-flow muffler yet, I'm concerned about the noise at cruising speeds. I have Lukey on the old 2.6 beast and it is very annoying cruising at highway speeds! I like noise when I drag, but I want peace and quiet when I cruise, makes sense?

ah great, here you go again about this.

Me and a mate went to alice springs in october last year to visit friends of his family, he paid me. and what better way to celebrate than to make the most of the unresticted speed limits.

I did it for personal enjoyment, not for yours. The subject was on rpm at speeds. So i told want my car does at that.

I didnt do it for braging. TO me, i love speed. its no different than taking your car down the qtr, its just a figure of what your car can do.

oh and the only reason i cut my speed limiter was, when i was wiring up my apexi RSM, it was one of the options when wiring it up, didnt take any longer to do... why not.
