Hi,

I have a 92 TR 2.6L Automatic, 230,000 klms. The engine is burning alot of oil and the timing chain is stretched very badly and its hitting the guard. Its embarassing.

Just wondering what option is the best for the engine, to replace the chain or replace the engine and what size/type of engine would be a nice choice? could a V6 go into it, and what type/size?? I have a new gearbox and ECU just installed so im not really keen to replace these.

Also, my tyres are 235/45/17's and they are wearing on the edges of the front 2 tyres. The recommended pressure is 44psi, any ideas, I have had multiple alignments from various places. but the car has been lowered (professional install) with king springs.

Any ideas/help would be much appreciated.

Depending on what else is wrong with the engine, i'd say all you'd need are your valve stem seals replaced and the timing chain replaced. Just get a general service on your car, if the engine is in a bad state, you may have to reco or buy a new one, though new Astron II's are getting hard to come by these days.

Gas_Hed: Where is the wearing of the tyres?

If its on the inside edges, it might be because of your lowering, if you want to avoid this you might want to look into caster camber kits etc.

If its on the outside edges, might just be you turning alot of corners fast?

If its just losing oil and noisy timing chain theres no need to replace the engine. Just fix up the one you have, its only done 230ks. its still good for another 80 thousand or so!
Get the chain replaced or tightened, i dunno what it needs. And check into replacing your valve seals or piston rings. Or even just start using thicker oil. The thicker oil will also help to reduce the crappy timing chain noise.

If you want a V6 chucked into it, it can be done. Just costs alot, unless your gonna do it all yourself. Its a popular idea for most people with the 2.6, but hardly anyone ever does it cause its just too much hassle and money.

the idea of chuckin in the v6 into the 4cylinder has been thrown around numerous times and it pretty much never happened. When i had to get my timing chain, oil pump and numerous other things replaced i looked into getting the V6 put in. But with needing a tranny, ECU the engine i was basically told i was not going to get any change out of 3 grand.
You will find the cheaper option is getting the engine reco'ed or the similar.

I had timing chain replaced, guides/balance shaft chain and guides replaced, modified camshaft sprocket, modified oil pump tensioner kit and oil pump gasket, sump gasket harmonic balancer seal, oil filter and oil, a coolant system flush, fuel injector sonication and new sparkies and ignition leads all done by a mechanic who i know who works/worked for eastside mitsubishi and it cost me 1 grand even.

read that mate, it'll give you a good idea on what to do about the smoke.

as for chain.. if ur compression is down, have them replace it when they recon your motor, if its just something else in the motor causing smoke, have them replace it anyway. have your tappets and lifters recon'd aswell

all will be fine again
