i just installed cold air piping into my TJ,
now first off all how ****ing awesome does the car sound when u put ur foot to the floor around 3500rpm to 5500rpm,
secondly theres so much more power there, like the car revs up so quickly.
and thirdly i'm keen to see how everyones set up is, like where their pipe goes and if u have the stock air box or if u have a pod, so get posting kids, i'll post mine when i wash my car tomorrow
cheers

Yeah mine makes my car run heaps cooler, before it use to overheat like hell, the increase in power isnt really noticable tho

What sort of CAI? Got pics?

yeh what sort of CAI, are you using a panel filter or a pod? Im gonna do mine soon with the exisiting panel filter and see how that goes.
If anyone can post a pic of a CAI in a TR I'd appreciate it. I'd like to put one in but don't really know what they look like.

i have a tr. it doesnt have a cold air intake though but i have planned it all out.
When you take out your factory air box and its atempt at cia you can see a hole that passes though out of the engine bay and in to the area behind the bumper. my plan was to run some heat proof air hose throught this hole and in to a pod filter behind the bumper.
it would be pretty easy but i just need to build a little cash to do it properly and as a first year apprentice thats hard.
It any one has any feed back on that cai plan let me know.

Plenty of pics there of my cai.
Also aegis theres a few problems with what your saying
1) It's called a ram pod and is illegal
2) You'll have to extend the MAS to the bumper cuz it wont detect the swirling air
3) Having the MAS at the bumper it may get wet and stop working, and i dont think they're cheap to replace.
The reason why you cant have your MAS where it is now is because by the time the air hits the MAS it is swirling like a ***** from the POD and it will stuff up your air/fuel ratios. Putting the MAS right on the POD will detect the air before it starts swirling.

here's the pics of my cai, i havent updated the filter yet, i went to super cheap to find out if k&n make a panel for TJ and they dnt, so i'm just trying to see wat my options r, maybe to make a new air box will see wat happens i guess. anyone know if a k&n for another model will fit??

thanks!

Is that airbox properly sealed ... looks like there is a gap between the blue hose and were it enters into the airbox which will mean that it will leak air and not perform as well as it could ?

i used that ribbed stuff when i did mine just to give me an idea exactly where my PVC piping would go. Doing it just like that would be extremely simple, but i like making things hard for myself :P
mine is still an ongoing project :P

Is there any heat resistant material used with a CAI? is it really nessiary?

oh ok so k&n do make one, stupid super cheap guy told me they dnt make one at all, lying basturd. ok so repco or autobarn.
no it isnt sealed, wat shoud i use??
um and no it wasnt hard it was just a matter of getting under the carand pulling it through, its a bit of a tight squeeze, i'll also had to remove the protective guard under the front bar, no great loss there. the noise is alot deeper and sounds alot like a rex does, same sort of burbling noise, which i luv.
does the k&n panel make that much of a difference compared to the stock one????
cheers

It sure does. Lets the engine breath easier and thats allways a good thing

lol i'll get yelled at for this but you could use duct tape to seal the hole, just use the tape to seal the hose to the box. Works fine.

it's probably quite obvious, but what sort of piping have u used? And is there any chance of small rocks being picked up? or isnt it that greater suction?

06-02-2005, 05:19 PM
I would say if your up it, and have a small off road excursion whilst following someone ... then potentially you could end up with small stones etc in the air box.
But if you have a filter in place ... no problem will be encountered :)

i spose if u tilted the end back slightly, pointed it towards the rear, there wouldnt be too much

I take it off every service and just get the pressurised air, clean it for about 10mins, but yes it gets dirty and no I cant get it up any higher :P
It always has clearance, just not alot, haha

Well if you cant raise it up any I'd be on the lookout for those pesky lumps, bumps and holes. Wouldnt want to see ya pod and MAF go bouncing down the road behind you.

I do heaps of highway driving at high speeds (often not legal) and knowing the road quality in WA, id have to say to be the worst in the world (never been on any other roads). Been over many dodgy bumps, it is VERY snug and tightly mounted..
Just seems the Verada front bar is that little bit higher than Magna ect.

the engine will sound good you hear it on a big v8 a real roar can be heard
by all rights tho you shouldnt get much more power tho as the amount of air entering your intake is still metered wther by a venturi or an injector check your not running a bit lean which leads to detonation in the cylinder and real probs down the line. remember your perfect fuel mixture is 14-1 more air changes this without other adjustments. you never get anything for free.

the pipe i used was just a random one from autobarn, nothing fancy. no it doesnt get any rocks in it, i'm mainly afraid of a rat crawling up it when i park it near wentworthville station to go to work, but besides that its no worries. so does anyone know wat to use to seal it up. and also if i attach a k&n panel to the air box will that screw the mixture around too much??
cheers

I guess you could get some of that heavy duty metal fly screen stuff to cover it up.

Will, u are a champ. u answered my question for me. How much was the pipng tho? and did it some in other colours?
At the moment, i am modifying the opening to my air box to suit a larger diameter pipe. I will post pics when it is done.

I've just done a CAI setup. Hose is this super thick canvasy type metal ribbed duct pipe that I obtained from OJ Speed shop (OJ Road near Payneham in Adelaide) at $33 per metre. I got 1.2 metres.
then used a 65mm 45 degree DWV bend ($4.50) in to a 70mm x100x50mm downwater pipe adaptor (heated in the oven to slide over the 45 bend).
Big question. The ducting is only 75mm wide and is neatly jamed in to the oval hole. what do I use to fill teh rest of teh hole? Duct tape? Any other clues?
Gives a nice throaty roar and back hiss when I back off the pedal :P noice!
BTW K&N panel here!

I have actually sone the same thing as u preacher man, but used the piping that big will used.
I have modified the air inlet and fibre glassed the bend to my air box.It needs another coating, but it works a treat.I willpost up some pics later when i get home.

1) It's called a ram pod and is illegal
So relocating the POD to elsewhere is illegal? Or is it illegal to have a POD filter?

pretty much if you have a pod it has to be enclosed or you could possibly blow up the country... i only generally know this is rule but am quite sure, plus its better for a pod to be heat sheilded.
Personally i'd go cai to pod as it keeps the harshest conditions away from your pod and is it the maf (mapped air flow) sensor or mas (as previously stated)???
My mate is making me up a stainless cai but as us second gen owners would know the stock box is gayly positioned behind the battery with no cold air fed...
edit found MAS = mass airflow sensor

Ok i'm not exactly sure on the rules of pod's cause i've heard so many different stories over the past week and i am confused like you wouldn't believe...
Basically what i can gather is that having a pod, jsut a pod, is illegal. If it is enclosed than it is legal. I've been told having a pod at all is illegal, but i'm not sure which to believe. I think if you have it enclosed theres no way a cop can tell its a pod or not and besides the obvious that it'd work better too.
ahh, I did not know this!
I guess I should go and get a K&N panel filter again (after I sold mine since getting a POD filter)
Hmmm

I have read somewhere that its also illegal to have an oiled pod even if its enclosed. Not sure why you would want to get the pod oiled though.
ezrider4u
12-02-2005, 08:45 AM
Well part of the maintenance of the of the K&N Filter is to oil it with the special oil K&N sells. You do not have to do it that often and when it is oiled it's not supposed to be "SOAKED" to the point that it drips oil. I would guess the reason it may be illegal to have any oiled filter even if enclosed is fire safety??
Most of the K&N products do say they are instended for "Off Road Use Only"
