Hey guys,
Well i've been thinking of respraying my car, but i dont know what options i have. The re-spray will be the same colour so there'll be no need to do engine bay, inside doors etc.
A few questions for ya's :-
1) Is it possible to hire out a painting booth with equipment and save on labour by doing it yourself?
2) Where are some good places that do re-sprays well and how much?
3) Best place to buy paint from? mitsubishi?
4) How much would my options cost me?
5) Anyone in vic that knows how to respray wanna help for some beer or nachos? :P
6) I've seen my paint new and it's abit dark, i wouldn't mind a lighter metallic blue, is that possible?
7) Should i keep the 2-tone or go all blue? (The silver will be re-sprayed as well)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answers:
1.) i dont like your chances unless u have a mate who is a panel beater. You could just buy a compressor and a spray gun and do it at home.....
2.) Resprays cost anywhere from $700-$5000 depending on dodginess factor.
3.) Get paint from a panel beater, or get it mixed up at any paint store i know autobarn mixes paint but they arent usually very accurate...although if yur sprayin the whole car i dotn see how it matters. Just make sure u get enuf paint first off, coz i doubt they'll be able to match it.....
4.) more than your car's worth.
5.) No.
6.) your paint is the colour it is on the side of your car...no paint fades that much that it goes from dark blue to what your colour is..........and yes u can go to a lighter blue....anything is possible.
7.) 2-tone is so 80's.......go a different colour all together, like fluro lime green.

Keep the 2 tone it looks sweet. In sa there is a place that dose same color resprays for like 500 but you have to sand it your self. sanding is a bastard of a job (i have been doing it for 4 months at work), i found out after i sanded my first car with out any knowledge of the job that you only need to take the clear coat off if its gooing the same color. as for the hiring a spray booth i know a guy but..... its in sa.

Its a ***** of a job if you want to do it yourself and get a decent finish.
You'll need to do some practise first.
Too many factors.
surface priming and sanding.
flashing times
paint/thinner mix with weather conditions
overlap space
coat thickness and ammount
clear coat thickness
gun nozzle settings and pressure regulation with compressor.
etc...
You need a fully closed shed with good ventilation. When painting doors/windows open, when drying doors/windows closed to keep bugs and debris out. (for some reason the bugs loooove wet paint) Getting it done by a pro shop means they will use a kiln (if available). Kiln drying gives an awesome finish.

I was actually thinking going all black, like ralli art black, but leaving the engine bay, inside of doors blue (to save on money). Dunno how dodgy that would look though? The sides of the car have faded, not nearly as much as the bonnet/boot though. The door insides are my original colour and are heaps darker. I dont really have the space or equipment to do it at home. I thought autobarn only mixed small cans, not big lots of paint?

Autobarn etc will mix large amounts. Also if you're going to get the car resprayed heres what I think:
Pay the good money to get it done right the FIRST time. Get the insides of the doors done otherwise it'll look absolutely horrendous and cheap.

I gotta agree. If you try an do it too cheaply, it'll come back and bite you. I did a full strip back and paint on my first car. It took me about 6 weeks to get it the way I wanted it. I was very happy at the end but by the time you calculate the time, hassle, cuts and scratches etc, it's worth paying the extra few hundred bucks for someone else to worry about.
Watch out for the cheaper prices too, they usually invovle you having your car in the primer stage and them just putting the paint coats on. 80% of your final finish is dependant on all the preparatory stages ( I learnt the hard way), so if you don't know what you're doing, your pride and joy could end up looking exceedingly average.
I also agree with painting the insides of your doors, looks very tacky when it's a different colour.

paint does not fade like that.....a black car will not fade to grey, it will stay black until the coat of paint is so thin that it starts coming off, and thats when u see the primer coming through underneath.
Ever wondered whether the person who had the car before u actually resprayed the car a lighter blue? thats why u cant find your colour anywhere as its not a genuine mitsu colour. and they done a dodgey paint job which is why your paint is coming off now, and why the insides of the doors are a darker colour........

I have to agree here, it aint as easy as spraying some console bits with a spray can.
Also if you want to go black it'll look silly if you leave the door jams and stuff blue. Plus to get black to look good you have to prepare the body immaculately other wise it'll look crap. Oh and its a ***** to keep clean, shows up every spec of dirt.
2pac sux!!! :D
hmm, i agree... paint everything you can... like the insides of the doors... i'm gonna dismantle the doors (like the window is comeing out, the locks, etc) and painting the door while it off the car. i'm also thinking about taking everything out of the car (like seats, carpet) i wanna cover up all of my old colour as much as possible (except for maybe the dash - i'll just mask it)
when i paint my car, i'm gonna paint everything except for the engine bay (cos i aint taking the motor out just yet) but i making sure i got heaps of paint so i can paint it later.
my mate works at a boat yard and does a lot of spray painting on boats. he's done a spray painting course and we're gonna do it in his shed (and borrowing lots of equipment from his work)...
as for black, heaps of sanding and fairing is needed to make sure the primer is flat (sanding is needed anyways if you dont want the orange peel look), cos your paint has 'hollows' and cos black reflects heaps, you'll see these imperfections (hence why car manufacturers make the paint orange peeled to hide these imperfections (it distorts the refelection) - cos they aren't gonna be assed making sure the paint is perfect)
