I have pioneer 6x9's in my parcel shelf and alpine 4" speakers in my dash running off a pioneer DEH-P5550MP. I also have recently got my hands on a pioneer 12" sub (800W) and a Philips amplifier. What I want to do is amp the sub and 6x9's and leave the 4"ers alone. Is this possible and how is the best way to do it?

Now for the detailed stuff:

Head Unit: Pioneer DEH-P5550MP (pic of rear of h/u below)
Rear Speakers: Pioneer 6x9 TSD690R 2-way 330W max
Dash Speakers: Alpine SPS-100A 4" 125W max
Amp: Philips DAP4040 (see here: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14382)
Sub: 12" Pioneer TSW305F 800W

To anyone who has a similar configuration, what did you do?

u don't think u want to amp the 6x9s coz that would just end up sounding weird.

bridge rear two channels for the sub, and front channels for the 4"....just set the gains correctly :)

so yes..its possible.

why not amp the 6x9's? What do you mean it would sound weird?
Sure, they sound good enough without an amp but what's so bad about amping them?

rear speakers are just fill, u already have the sub for bass and it would be much much much more beneficial to amp the front speakers as that is where the majority of ur sound comes from.

yeah you dont need to amp the 6x9s

it is pointless as big paul said they're just a fill, you will get better gains from amping the 4"s if you set your gains right

ok, thanks...kinda new to this stuff. Now, 'gains' erm what's that?

If you look at the pic I see 'gain control' on the amp, is that what you mean?

Won't amping the fronts blow the speakers as they are ony 4"?

thats why u need to set the gain controls correctly! lol

no point amping the rears coz they will just create a weird arsed sound stage, hence sounding weird. Your 4s should be able to handle some power...c'mon they're alpines! :P

ok, set the gain controls correctly...to what, exactly? I have the option of 1, 2 and 0.3v.

Personally i'd chuck out the Alpine dash speakers and install some larger component speakers in the front doors. If your convinced you want to amp the rears then sell off your philips amp and buy a 5 channel amp (good quality) then one amp does all.

If your deck is a high output model why not just throw a monoblock on the Sub and leave the others on the deck?

Can't be arsed. Lobster sticks to magnet.

You'd have to supply me with a years worth of breasts equal to or greater than the ones in my av. for me to seriously consider that.

do ya know what ya doin yet???
seriously though, amp the fronts and the sub.

i've had it explained that the way to set your gains is to:

1) turn all your amp gains to lowest possible setting,
2) crank your head unit till you stat to hear distortion then back it off a little.
3) crank the amp till you start to hear distortion then back it off a little.
4) enjoy the sweet sweet sounds.

also (and i'm still bein serious now) once you set it up, try disconnecting the 6x9's .

i know this sounds strange but try it. i was running 3 way splits in the front, 7x10's in the back shelf and 2 x 10" subs in the boot. (only the subs were amp'd). A mate told me to try disconnecting the 7x10's to increase the bass and believe it or not, it actually worked. something about the 7x10's messin with the sound waves from the subs.

good luck with the audio gear dude,

Jonathan

I'll amp the sub and the fronts, as suggested.

Amp the fronts and the sub, they can take it.
Tim
6x9's will stay, unamped.
The pub will remain unamped as well.
