Hi all
am having problems with exsesive fuel consumption, like 150km/half tank.
I replaced air filter and things seem to have improved, while i had air filter housing cover off i noticed a disintergrated peice of what appears to be sponge in a small retangular housing that has a small oily lookin pipe coming from somewhere in the engine opening into it.
Any ideas what this spongy looking part is and why it is there? Is it necessary? could it be effecting my fuel consumption/
Many thanks for any ideas you may have.

Carby? Fuel injected?
If it's injected, your injectors are dirty, or your oxy sensor has had it.
Is it the guage that's gone? Mine's currently always empty (O/C reader)

Hio Gav
it's got a carby, and it's definately using the fuel, the guage is a bit stuffed but I'm going by the trip metre/litres put in.

As for that spongey thing, yeah its sposed to be there, part of emissions i think, dont pull it out because it will fall apart!! Like my old one :P

Thanx AussieFella
to late i allready chucked it, replaced it with scouring pad (new) cut to size, car seems to be running ok.
What I'm really trying to get to the root of is why I'm using so much gas, I'm baffled, 17.5ltr/100km is excessessive by anyones standards, even though it's round town and an auto.
cheers

Ok mate, all i can really think of now, it maybe your carby needs a clean, get a can of carby cleaner and spray the **** down the throat of the carb. Check all your hoses connected to the carb, ive heard of fuel economy going to the ****ter because vaccum hoses arent connected.
Hope this helps.

well if u have my car then those figures are about right.
but thats what u get from having an extreme exhaust system on a stock engine, and a tonne of weight from an entertainment system.
if i tuned the carb it would be like 2Ls better, but still higher than my 8cyl or hilux.

MAte, u got the exact same problem as I do. I get 300km out of a tank using regular unleaded. Its a carby auto, and I dont even rev it hard. It sucks when ppl have much better cars with more power etc and ur car still uses **** loads of fuel than theirs.
Sent it off to carby specialist etc and still cant fix it.

I have to use premium, coz my car don't like regular, kicks up a fuss and shuts down unless it has premium.
see, even cars have requests sometimes, lol

Pull out your plugs and check their condition/colour. Drinking 18L/100km would see them pretty badly sooted with carbon - thick enough to scrape off every 500kms.
As for potential reasons "why"...
Auto choke stuck on?
Leak in fuel system (cracked pipes, weeping unions etc)?
Sticking brakes?
Engine overfilled with oil.
