View Full Version : Going thru the firewall
What is the best way to feed an amp power cable through the firewall of a 95 TS Magna?. I have done searches and read bits and pieces here and there. Drilling new holes really isn't an option. If people who have done this could provide some instructions and maybee a few detailed pictures showing where the wiring goes I'd be most appreciative.
Oh, and what's the best way to bring wiring from the head unit into the boot (where the amp will be)? I assume that the wires would go from the back of the H/U, under the centre console, under the rear passenger floor carpet and then underneath the rear seat and into the boot on the lef/right side. Wiring is 6 guage.

Hey mate
1 As for running the power cable run it down the passenger side of the car there is a big Grommet that you can easily fit 0 guage wire thru.
2 Then run the wire down thru the wire channels ( undo the foot plates in your doors and then lift the carpet up)
3 Also as for running the RCA's from the Head unit to the Amp run these down the drivers side down the wire channels (do the same thing as what u did for the power wire)
4 you can either take the back seat out and feed the wire thru that way when u get to that or you can just mingle the wire thru another hole behind the seat (very hard to explain sorry and this method is fiddley you will need small hands or alot of patience).
I will try and find some pics but i dont own the TS anymore i will see if my friend (who now owns my old TS will take some pics for me i will let you know.
Hope this was some help

EDIT: I found one Very average pic it might help a bit but yeah the grommet is behind the area that i circled hope it helps

this is where i put my 8 gauge wire
there is a gromitt there
and then down the foot well channels
yes take out the back seat too
then into the boot
you'll need 8m of wire min
sorry i don't have a after shot
perfect! Did either of you run your cabaling inside some sort of heat proof casing or split loom in the engine bay? Won't the amp power cable get really hot in there and melt if it's not protected?
you'll need 8m of wire min
That's ok, if I don't have enough I'll mount the amp under the driver's seat instead of the boot.

You can protect them with plastic loom tubes, they come in many sizes. Heat shouldn't be a major problem as it shouldn't be running alongside anything that gets hot, or any part of the engine itself.
Use cable ties or clips to hold it down, make sure it can't move around in the engine bay.
Ensure it is fused close to the battery. Within 30 cm... This will prevent a fire if it shorts against metal. Also make sure it does not rub against any sharp metal edges eg firewall.
Dont run your rca leads near your power lead as this will cause interference.
Peace

Have a look at the pic i posted before you will see the fuse withing 5cm of the battery and then you can see how i have laid the cable ( it's the big red one im sorry i dont have any better pics) you will have no problems at all with heat as long as you run the cable as close to the outside of the car and close to the firewall (like i have in the pics) i can show you pics from my VRX if you want?? but that will prolly be useless for you

got it all wired up, all systems go. Thnx for the pics fellow AM members :)
sorry to have to bump a semi-old thread - but where can you feed cable through on a 96 TE? ive poked my head in as far as i can, and cant spot anything

Dee, i've found a small opening on the passenger side of the car where it leads down to the quarter panels. It basically leads to the side blinkers, but on the rear of the blinkers is a grommet which you can poke through.
I was lucky to have my hard work already done for me, since there was already another cable there which I had to get rid of, I just used that as a "puller".
I'd like to know if there is any easier to access grommets in the engine bay though, I had a TS 2.6L which had a fairly large grommet on the passenger side which lead directly to the back of the glove box. It was by far the best route I've ever seen.

Assuming its the same as a tf, when you look down at the middle of the firewall from the engine bay, you will see a tube going straight into the firewall (down very low), this has a huge grommet (big enough to fit 0 gauge through. You cant see the grommet from the engine bay as the firewall cover is too thick, but if you go inside the car you can see it easily from the drivers side by folding down the carpet.
Slice a SMALL hole through this with a screwdriver or stanley knife, then force the wire through, this will ensure a nice watertight fit.
Be sure to use cable ties, and run the wire around the sides of the engine bay avoiding moving parts.
Also fuse within 20cm of the battery to avoid burning your car to the ground.
Other choice is through the steering column grommet but this can interefere with moving parts and cause problems.
Peace

Alright.. awsome. Ive just threaded my power cable through the firewall through the side, and into my amp in the boot (hahaha this was hard >.< but i rock :P). Then... hooked up everything else
i go back to my car battery to attach the power cable to the amp
i go to undo the negative terminal first (i was told to do this)...
and ...
squeeeeeeeeeel... not me squeeling.. the car.... :| .. i guess its my car alarm? After a silght panick attack (thinking i was dying), i put the negative terminal back on the battery, and it stops...
and i run inside.. and get on here.. and ask.. .WTF
did i do something wrong :| or is this standard for a car alarm? i ve got a tiny key, which ive been told can turn off the alarm system or something... should i do this... or did i make a boo boo?
ta
oooh and... how i was saying there was already a connection on the positive terminal... ive got a strong feeling thats the power cable to my car alarm.

Sounds like your alarm has a battery-back up system on it that does just that and senses for the battery being disconnected and goes off.
On one I had before, there was a sequence of pushing the remote buttons that put the alarm into 'service' mode that meant you could disconnect battery etc without it going off, but sounds like you have a key that you will have to put into either the siren or the main control box (some alarms it's all in one). So, get looking for a hole to put that key into, then switch the alarm off and go with the install, just remember to turn it on again afterwards!

Hi Guys. I know i has been a month and a half since anyone posted, but I had to run some cables through the firewall of my TS, and here are some close up photos of it. Unfortunately one was blurred, as it was pitch black up where the cables came through. Once I had poked them through, it was a ***** getting them down, as i couldnt reach. Another coat hanger bit the dust.....
