View Full Version : Tax cheque spending spree! Advice on subs please!!
Hey guys,
ok im hoping to get a bit back from my tax cheque everything going well and i need some help choosing some subs and amps for my setup.. heres what i wanna do.
get either 2x 10 inch or 2x 12 inch subs - but they have to be good bank for buck.. i dont want cheap shit but dont wanna waste money either - money is gonna be fairly tight for this install..
either 1 or 2 amps, one for the subs and one small one for the speakers, unless you think that a 4x50w headunit will be powerful enough to drive a front set of splits and 1 set of rear 6x9s,,
and also reccomend a set of splits for the front.. what size fits in properly for a TH 99 in the OEM mounting position?
please give me some idea as i have NFI with audio gear.
Im running an alpine HU 4x50w with i think 3 rca outputs.. i have sony xplod 6x9s in the back but the rest of the gear is stock at the moment..
not worried about the brand names etc as long as it sounds good - although i like the look of the alpine subs (the white cone ones) i sorta want the subs to look ok too..
Thanks for the help!

Good question mate  ..I was just about to post basically the same questions
Also how do you work out how much space is required inside the box for the 10 or 12" subs - is there a big difference in sound output if i had say 2x 10 inch or 2x12 inch, and is the box space saving big or little?

Best bang for buck sub is the one I have IMHO
It cost me 80 bucks and it's UNREAL
;) Going to make a sine sweep cd so I can see how low it goes!

What kind of budget are we working with here?
I don't like running speakers off the head unit, especially front splits. These are the most important speakers in the system. So consider a 2-channel amp for the splits and run the 69s off the head unit as these aren't important to you as the driver. Then use either a large 2 channel, bridged 4-channel or monoblock for the subs. Monoblocks are better as they are more efficient so they will suck less juice from the alternator/battery. You could even use a single 4-channel amp with 2 channels for the splits and the other 2 for the sub(s).
If you only get one sub you can get something with better sound quality and you can still go pretty loud with the right sub. eg. Kicker Solobaric or Digital Design 3000 series.
Give us an idea of budget and I can be more precise. And ask yourself honestly if you prefer SQ or like cruizin while your car goes doof-doof?

You can use a subs Thielle/Small specs to figure that out (beyond me) but most manufactures will give a recommended size for their subs for a ported or sealed box. If you are building the box yourself sealed is easier. Some also give a range for the size. eg. JL Audio 10W3 0.60-0.90 cubic feet. The smaller the box the less efficient the sub is. So when in a 0.6 cubic feet box the sub would need more power to reach it's full potential then if it was in a 0.9 cubic feet box. Unfortunately most manufacturers don't go into that much detail.
Ok mate thanks heaps for the reply..
i enjoy quality - im not into doof doof - the main reason that i want to do this is because on my way home from work im in 110 zones the whole way on noisy bitumen and the current setup is almost at its limit when i can hear a nice sound and the road noise is drowned out...
we would be building the box ourselves - im giong to get my dad to help me design up a decent boot enclosure - similar to sinergy's boot install where the two subs will be by the brake lights firing at the back of the boot.. but the amp position will be different and hopefully i wont have to raise the floor much..
the budget im HOPING to work with will be about $1000 - $1200 tops for the gear alone - just the subs amp and HOPEFULLY again a set of splits for the front but i know im pushing it..
i dont really want to go below 10" for the subs tho - if im going to do it id rather save and do it right the first time if 2x 10" subs arent going to do what i want them to..
again thanks for the info in advance :)
Oh and i sorta wanted to go for 2 subs to even up the boot space a bit because we're going to mould it all in so it looks like it was meant to be there :)

for a budget that size i would go for say 2x12" kicker ex not as good as the comp vr's but heaps cheaper and still sound nice. may not look as nice as the alphines but would sound better... and u can get those grills for them... they look cool...
then i'd invest some money in decent splits.... reference series mbquartz or the polyglass focals.... then u will need some grunt to drive the subs so best bang for bucks would have to be the 4 channel jaycar amp 4x100w rms use this to run the subs and get a nice amp to match the splits you choose. if buying quality splits get quality amps.... within reason though.
look around cashies for good deals....
've seen kicker zr120's going for under $250 these retailed for over $500 from memory....
although i wouldnt buy subs or speakers from cashies....
splits.... the headunit wont be able to cope.... and u will end up damaging the splits... they definitely need an amp
or blaupunkt gear.... the velocity series is reasonable cheap but sounds veryvery nice...
if u live in perth... go to oz com fremantle... the subs look very nice..... gold coated look expensive.... these guys make the standrad stero equipment in bmw's and porsches
