Lately my car has developed a rattle in the steering column. When I go over a bump in the road the steering column seems to rattle a little. I have also noticed a very small amount of power steering on the large metal triangular guard underneath where the column comes out of the firewall.

Is this a common problem with this model?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I meant to mention mine is a 1997 TF 3.0

I have a 98 TF and I have a slight rattle in my steering colum too, mine is my aftermarket steering wheel is a little lose. maybe yours is a similar problem just a thought.

I had a similar problem, slight rattle when i went over bumps, i replaced the power steering rack (cos it was full on dripping) and now its gone away.

I wouldnt say a leaky pwr steering rack is the prob but id have the rack checked out anyway, not sure what else it could be tho :doubt:

EDIT: oh and i had my stock wheel on then i put on a sports one and it still had the rattle so it wasnt the wheel...

Any idea what a replacement rack would cost?

well id get it checked out first, cos u dont wanna spend the money if u dont have to.

but a good reco rack your looking bout 475-500 +150 labour :rant:

but it all depends who u go throuhg, 1 guy quoted 650 for the rack and 200 labour

same thing happens in my car when i turn sharpley more than 2 full turns it make light a rattlignm noise something like it not to sure what it is but ill be putting it into a service soon how much does a service cost usually?

That all depends what u need, if your not doin filters or anything like that then prolly bout $80, if u replace all your filters maybe round 180-220$

You may also want to check your pwr steering belts as they could be slipping, usually causes a squeaky noise but if they're jumping a little maybe cause a rattle :confused:

I know of 3 more Magna's which do the same thing. It feels as if it is a bearing or something in the steering coloum directly behind the steering wheel.

It happens when going over railway lines, turning around round-abouts etc if there is bumps in the road etc. It's bloody annoying but it appears to be a common fault. Even a leased TJ VRX and TL VRX did the same thing and these were new.

My Ralliart is in the shops at the moment looking at this exact problem.
