Does anyone have any ideas on how to secure that wood board that sits over the spare in the boot? It is driving me nuts...every bump in the road theres a thud in the boot...i think its the floor in it bouncing up and down. Anyone have the same prob? I was thinking of somehow screwing it down with wingnuts...so i can open it easy in the event of a flat...

Any ideas???

that wood is so light i doubt its making the "thump" you claim..

have you checked that everything in the spare tyre well is infact tied down? in the center of the spare weel, there is a wingnut with a really large washer - that secures your spare tyre, make sure that is tight...

also have you got any tools other then the jack (which have a look to see if its tight too) in there.. ?

personally, its a bit funny - cos it takes a really big thud to hear in the passenger cabin.. :S

Yeah it bangs around. My solution was to go to Clark rubber (or similar) and buy a couple of metres of automotive underlay. This went UNDER the carpet, on top of the wooden board. Then I dropped $175 at the dealers to get a Plastic bootliner (see pic) and that fits snugly over the top of the carpet. End result - the whole car is quieter and the 'board' thing never moves.

Added benefit - no more vacuuming of that damn boot carpet either!

Yepper - part number MR925698 - Boot Liner - $159 + GST and yes its a very practical thing.

You sure its the board? Cause i have never heard of it moving around and making loud thud noises..

It could possibly be that one of your bump stops has perish and when you hit a bump you here the thud.

If you are positive its your wood board, buy a thicker peice of MDF and make a copy of the current board.. it will be heavier and wont move around.

No it's definitely the cheap and crappy board in the boot, and it drives me nuts too - a wooden "clank" over almost every bump. I think I may have to do the Clark Rubber thing as well.

i did check the jack and bits, but i mite take another look at them.

Sarras, how does having that underlay stuff ontop of the wood, under the carpet help?

i would take a pic but i dont have my magna with me today. they arnt realy clips, they are like slot things that it sits in. there is 2 of. and the weight of the carpet keeps it from moving from that position.

looking from the back of the car, they are just on the other side of the hole where the wheel goes. one on either side. then the other side sits flush against the bacl of the car. of doesnt move nowhere..

Sorry to dig up a old topic but I think my TF is having exactly the same problem.

Every time I go over a bump there is a loud thud, initially I thought it was suspension, so put the car on a hoist but mechanic claims no issues there.

Then I realised that the wood bit is loose, does not fit securely to the 2 clips/hinges towards the back of the boot. Also there are 3 pieces of wood underneath the carpet? Two on the either side are missing after getting broken. Maybe this has lessened the weight to keep the centre large piece of wood down and now suddenly it has started going up and down over bumps and speed humps?

Either way, it is driving me nuts.....

Almost every car I've ever had with a boot has had one of those useless compressed wood covers. I use it as a template and cut one out of plywood. Then I buy decent hinges, coat the underside in sound deadener, and paint the thing. No more loose crappy board in the back of the car. Total cost - $25 tops!!

Just to let you know guys that the problem was with the exhaust not pushed back into its rubber mount when the smash repairers changed the rear bumper.

All OK now :)
