Ok this is a weird one. Over the last few weeks, my car has come up with a horrible screach, but not a brake squeal like when your braking (which I have too). It doesnt happen until I have been driving for at least 25 or so minutes, then all of a sudden when I take off slowly or fast, this like swirling squeal comes in and I'm sure it is coming from the brakes cause it squeals slowly at first and gets quicker and quicker as I get faster and when I press the brakes in slightly while still driving it stops, but sure enough, if I release them again, it comes back like nails down a blackboard. It is only at slowish speeds though. It will make a hell of a noise like a slipping belt up to 40k's ish then it will go away, but when I slow down again or stop and take off, back it comes.

The noise sounds like its coming from behind the glove box/engine bay area, but it's so loud it could be anywhere from the front...

Please help!

Has it had a service recently?

Reason im asking is, mine had a service and they tightened the handbrake (too tight) so i got some rubbing when taking off. A quick bit of loosening of the handbrake resolved the issue.

Sounds like your brakes arent releasing properly..

No, not in the last 6 months. But did tighten up the handbrake, however it was happening before then... It's just strange it only happens when its warm...?

I think that most brake pads have a 'tell-tale' in them, so that you know when the pads are just about out of life. If you have lots of kms in your front pads, you should consider this.

PS - I am getting a squeal from my back brakes and, after 200,000 kms, I am going to replace them in the next couple of weeks. The brakes are still functional for some time yet - and in case they are the rear ones anyway.

that squal could be the ware indercator on the break pads, if its the sort of thing to go away for a few seconds when u put ur foot on the break then squal a few seconds later, i would say it might be the pads when was the last time you had them checked??

Thanks for your thoughts guys, but it squeals when the brakes are RELEASED not when I put them on. And only when the car is hot. Also I have only just about 2 months ago replaced the pads with some Bendix...

Any other Ideas...?

Can the brakes be not releasing enough and when it gets hot, the pads and breaks expand and rub/squeal on the disk? is there a setting I can alter so they release further?

hi,
im not too sure about your brakes, but sliding or floating calipers may stick on the sleeve.
what about steering effects? when you dont brake, does the car slightly turn to one side? and have you touched your rims after driving? perhaps you will mention a difference on one side!

cheers

yer i get this on the back,
could just be some dust between the pads and the disc,
give it a clean out if u say u just got new pads and see how that goes

I have the exact same symptoms with my TR Magna. After about 20 mins a loud squeel apears but if you apply the brakes very slightly it goes away until you release the brakes and then the squeel returns. The pads look good so im not sure what the problem is. Hope someone can help us!
