HELP!!!!!!!!

ok atm im pretty drunk but before i did any drnking 2nite me and a mate went out for a run up the local hill. was fine until i heard a MASSIVE backfire and the engine died. im like... ok, this isn't cool lol... but anyway i let it sit for a good 10 mins or so. now, this is wat happens:

cranks fine and kicks over fine. but it WILL NOT IDLE. it will die 3 or 4 seconds after kicking over.

wen i do keep it alive and drive it, wen it accelerates it feels fine. wen there is no throttle it is fine. wen there is a slight bit of accel (just enough to keep it at the speed limit) it jolts hardcore all over the shop.

wen i take the foot off the accel at about 50/60 in 2nd, it will backfire alittle which it has never done before. everything sounds fine wen the engine is running.

at first i thought the chain had given way. but it hasnt, the oil light came on but thats just cause the engine stopped. next i thought it was vacuum, checked all vacuum hoses and all are still attached. thought it might be a fuse. checked all fuses, they are fine. maybe spark? i had no tools so i couldnt check timing etc... i checked all leads and they seemed fine. ill have a look at them 2morrow.

then, my heart sank and thought... wat if it's the carby? could it be the carby? could the massive backfire as i changed back to 2nd at 75 or so blown something in the carby? remember, it won't idle... if there is a tiny bit of accel it will jolt hardcore (half throttle its fine)... backfires a fair bit (didnt do it at all before)... my oil and coolant are fine. temps stayed normal... PLEASE HELP... I NEED MY CAR FOR UNI NEXT WEEK!!!

should i rebuild the carby ASAP? wat else could it be. i was so pissed off i went straight out and got drunk as, but now that im sobering up it's starting to hit me...

all the help anyone could give me is appreciated... thanks

Have you checked the float level in the carby, also check the condition of the main jet

Sounds like the idle circuit in your car has been blocked, was the backfire an intake backfire or an exhaust ?
If it was an intake backfire I suppose theres a chance a crumb of carbon or some such from your engine has got into the idle circuit, hence the drives ok until I take my foot off the accelerator. If you desperately need the car for uni then you can jack up the idle until you come off the idle circuit into the main jets, this will mean you idle at around 2 grand, not very recomended :P but it will get you to uni and back.
But if you want to try yourself then your prolly gonna have to rip the carby off, remove the float boals and ream the thing with carby cleaner, every passage you can find. Problem with that is you'll stuff the gaskets when you pull it off/apart and I'm not sure how easy it is to find carby kits for them, could be very easy, dunno. Otherwise it's gonna have to go to a carby dude or your gonna have to go to a wreckers in search of a workin carby :/

Hope this helps

damn my head hurts. alcohol is cool

well, backfire came out the exhaust. but yeah, please just tell me its not engine related... internally that is. if its carby thats fine, i can get it rebuilt within the week easy. rotor, i can source another pretty quick and try and fix mine for a spare.

aslong as it isn't anything major. that's wat im worried about. im starting to have as much luck as Gav with my car

if the idle circuit is blocked, would that effect any other part of my electrical system in the car? my dash lights did flick off then on quickly. this is y i thought it might be a fuse, but all were fine.
