Im sooo not happy

Just got of the phone to lifestyle, cos I sent my sub off for repair under warranty.. Apparently Rockford Fosgate have sent it back saying I have burnt it out and they wont replace it because it has been used improperly.

Im rather annoyed.

Just wondering tho, what does improper use entail? The guy on the phone said I hadnt run it in properly, and that I had it cranking at more than 75% of the HU volume..

This pissed me off even more, as theres no way you could listen to the stereo that loud. The other speakers I have would sound like SH1T at that volume, as well as being rather distorted.. and as for not running it in properly, I am certain I did so, its so unlike me not to take care of my possessions.. especially ones Ive paid good money for..
The amp is not too powerful for them, the setup was recommended by the guy at lifestyle!! and the gain isnt even all the way up...

He reckons its been clipping for a while and thats the cause, but I know what clipping subs sound like, and if it was doing that, I would have stopped it...

so i guess now what i need to know is, has anyone else had dealings with rockford fosgate au, or lifestyle.. or know how to argue this..

If they cut it open and found the voice coil blackened, then they always assume clipping killed it - too hard to prove otherise.

Unfortunatly, warranty doesn't cover this kind of damage - been there, done that - they do cover over-excursion () as I found out after tearing a voice coil out of the spider :)

Believe it or not, most people cannot pick distortion until it reaches about 15% THD - your average headunit runs at around 10% THD at high volumes, and it doesn't sound distorted.

Well is it possible that the sub was faulty?

And if not, and I have been pushing it too hard.. should I bother replacing it with the same sub? Or should i be looking to upgrade to something a little better?

and here's me worried about my amp having <0.02% THD...I could be a SQ freak and claim I can hear up to 30000000Hz and pick out distortion greater than 0.000001% :P

Yeh, I don't think they are supposed to cover that type of damage. what was the amp running it? Oh well

It probably wouldn't be worth repairing, unless u have an emotional attachment to it or whatever.

Was run by an alpine m-350 Monoblock amp...

700W, 350W x 1 RMS [2Ohms @ 14.4V (1% THD)], 200W x 1 RMS [4Ohms @ 14.4V (1% THD)]

So do I buy another RF again? or go wit something that wont break?

I dunno, up to you, depends on how much u wanna spend also. Could stay in the Alpine theme and get an alpine sub :)
