i know tappets have been disscussed many times on here but mine are starting to get seriously noisey. They used to be noisey while the engine was cold and then quieten down once the engine heated up. Now they are noisey all the time. Are they really hard to replace? Is there any other way around it rather than replacing? Im mechanically fairly competent and do most work on my own car but never anything like this.
So what do i need to do it, what other parts, where should i get them and while im doing this is there anything else i should replace or fix or such while im in the engine? note the car is TR 4cylinder EFI.
also if someone has done it before about how long did it take and how mechanically competent would you judge yourself to be.

They are automatically adjustable, you cant do them yourself.

what do you mean? people have talked about doing them on here before and as far as i know they spray oil onto the top of the engine. i dont see how they couldnt be replaced What do you mean by automatically adjustable?

i thought the TRs used roller rockers...

Dont think so, they are the same as the 1st Gens arent they?
Don't the TRs have lash adjusters between the valve stem and the rocker (or is it between the rocker and the cam)? Which can wear out and need to be replaced?

Luke what you need to do is replace the Hydraulic Lifters (lash adjusters)
There not cheap for lifters and u need 8 of them. If you want them to last buy genuine mitsu ones.
You will also need a rocker cover gasket, half moon and bolt seals and also the cam seal at the back of the head (good time to replace the water pump belt)
To R&R the lifters u need to remove the rocker cover (careful not to break the brittle PCV hose) and the rocker assembly from above the cam (careful not to drop lifters into the sump). Then slide the old lifters out of the rockers and slide the new lifters in (after soaking them in oil for over 1hr, fit them the correct way up).
Then refit the Rocker assembly while holding the lifters in place (they fall out) and retighten the bolts to the correct tension,
Undo and re-tighten rocker bolts in a pattern lsimilar to headbolts and turn each bolt evenly to spread the load from any cam lobes that are up and to avoid breaking the rocker assembly.
Don't scratch the cam bearings or journals and finally u will need a Torque wrench that is accurate at low settings.
Refit the rocker cover
If they still tap when you restart the car and it has walmed up, hold 1st gear and hit 5000rpm for a few seconds on the test drive. If they still tap check engine oil pressure.
TR and TS 4cyl have rollers over the cam and lifters over the valve stems

Ring your local friendly mitsu dealer and ask for spare parts!

Did mine today. :D
Woohoo... no more tappy tap tappy. lol
The intake adjuster on the 4th cyl did a job on the valve stem though :rant:, Filed it and tapped it with a hammer to smooth it out.
All up it cost me $97.50, Incl rocker gasket and gasket goo.

Like benau said. If fact here's some pics.
It is easy the hardest part is the cost of the new lifters. I bought Repco ones and they where half the price but still stupidily expensive.

And don't over tighten the rocker cover or they crack.

Ok! My bad, i thought they were the same as 1st gens.
they are, they all have self adjusting tappets, just some people call them lashs.
you can recon your own ones to save some money, get some carbi cleaner and or petrol and clean out everything from the rockers and give it a quick wipe out with a small wire brush, also make sure the ball bearing isnt jammed.
dont rev the motor once they are still getting settled, can crack tappets

just thought id let people know i did the lash adjusters today along with the bypassing of coolant to the throttlebody and new fuel filter.
Went to mitsu for lash adjusters but they wanted $40 each which makes it a very expensive job for something so small. in the end got them from bursons for $11 each which is a hell of a lot nicer. NO more tapping, clicking or anything, could not be any happier with the results. It drives like a completely new car smooth as anything. :D

Just a note, i had the same prob, 1999 advance 3.5 and it was ticking from cold to even when it was warm... THen i changed the oil and its never come back since.... AM i lucky????? or a warning sign?

maybe your car was ticking because your engine didnt like the oil that was used. I found that the tappping noise varied with what oil i used. This time tho i used a slightly thinner oil.
