I very recently tried to source one of these filter kits for the 3rd gen... some people just gave me that :eh: look and others thought they knew what they were talking about but didn't, instead trying to sell me their own version.

http://neilk.customer.netspace.net.au/HyperTF/caishort.jpg

Now a few of the guys at my local Autobarn seem to have an interest in the car and tried to locate one of these kits and thankfully through their persistence found the unlisted part number for the K&N product code (even some of the K&N reps didn't have any idea!) but when K&N looked they said that according to their records there are no units left in Australia... I am so not wanting to believe this... so I am just throwing this out there.

I am after any information (constructive), part numbers, product codes, stores that have sold them.... anything... i think they are ordering me in one, i need to double check.

I know there was a group buy here on them before I joined, so I am hoping that some people here can help me out, any info will be much appreciated. Even if you want to sell ;)

I am in Vic by the way, but any ideas fire away... cheers.

btw: Thanks to the owner of the pic :D

Yeh...then don't u get the problems of the 'pod sucking hot air in engine bay' thing? Or the pod vs panel, or oval pod vs normal pod thing.

If u get a bigger, like 5" pod filter, its the same as an oval shape one..apparently

I"m trying to start a war here  no, not really.

Thanks all for the responses

ezrider4u: Thanks heaps for the product specs... just what I was looking for. I am doing up a new web page and I am trying to get all technical specs for parts. (Plus it will help me)

greenmatt: Yeah... my brain wasn't working too well when I started the thread... Phillcom was my next port of call, cheers.

kodos: Very interested... please keep me informed thanks... I am good for the $$$

Eek: Yeah, it has been a concern. I have a K&N panel at the moment and would like to give the pod a go (plus I like the sound) Once I land one of these I am going to look into direct heat shielding and venting airflow in the engine bay. About the shape... I keep hearing that the oval one is the way to go for to lessen air swirl across the MAF sensor, probably one of those arguments that will continue till the cows come home like with panel versus pod versus stock lol

Why have you decided against a CAI kit to this stage. You've done a fairly extensive list of mods i thought the CAI would have been 1st or 2nd?

No I have been looking at the prices you're looking at paying in Aus. Even at a high exchange rate that is a lot of case. Suugestion for ya, check EBay- go to the USA EBay home and just search for K&N. I guarantee you you can do much better. Like I said I paid $139 for FIPK for my car even with shipping that's nowhere near the Aus $400-$600 I saw in a couple of Aus sites. Just my 2 cents trying to save you some cash.

To be honest, I don't know... I guess I got the K&N panel and left the pod idea aside, but I have met a few Vic members with them now and I am impressed, and guess I would like to look into it. I am also creeping up to another inspection and retune of the EManage and would like to get a few things tied off before I do. Then I might look at the exterior again, whilst saving and researching/sourcing and pricing up some more serious engine mods later in the year I am considering.

Much appreciated, I have come to find when these sales people actualy do their homework it works out to be more expensive typically (as they usually assume same price brackets as Ford and Holden)... so yeah I am hunting for a reasonable price and am confident that I will find what I am looking for.

Thanks again for the responses :D

Well I have the K&N pod fitted (Cheers Bain) and boy does it sound good! as for performance... I don't think it has done much for speed from my K&N Panel, but unless I am imagining things it feels like I might have gained on torque, especially up hill.... but boy it sounds awesome now, loud, deep and grunty... like a small V8. Might be starting to attract too much attention though :shifty:

On WOT and above 2800 RPM it really kicks in and growls, very happy with it, though if I am doing drags any time soon I would like to try with both as I am not sure if I have gained anything in the speed dept.

Did I mention how good it sounds? lol

Is it possible that I have gained on torque or am I possibly imagining it? certainly felt like it had more guts on steep hills with it.

I will take a pic on the sunny side though I am sure you have all seen it before. Now it's time to investigate air flow... I have some wild ideas planned (all top secret of course - in case it doesn't work out lol)

yeah pod filters do sound awsome ay ,

especially at WOT at about 4500rpm , completely different sound,

but yeah, i gained .1 sec on the quarter mile going from a panel to pod, but that could caused by anything, mind u the terminal speed did go up quite a bit.

if u have some spare cash lying around u should try installing THsmokers CAI kit, thats what im planning to do when i'v got a couple of hundred spare

good luck

benny_TE: I have thought and thought about the CAI setup and although it is appealing I want to investigate some other alternatives. As I said earlier in this thread I am looking into heat shielding and air flow in general... One thing I might do is pretty radical but by no means new. I just might cop an earfull from some lol

TF_ADVAN: Oh look I am happy with it... I took it for a test drive after the install and instead of driving around the block i ended up driving for over an hour lol Just don't forget the issue about heat unless you end up going the piped CAI route, but others have left it as is.

Kodos said earlier in this thread he might have his up for sale soon and...

Read this: SlickTH had concerns about the Pod getting too hot http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14704

His looks like it might be up for grabs too... I accepted there was possibly going to be heat problems when I bought it.

There are also concerns about the legality of having one in the open engine bay although I don't know why as filters used to be exposed in the engine bay all the time.... I am going to try and look into this but I don't intend to have it in the open as is for too long anyway.

Anyway, cheers and good luck with finding one :D

:

just adding 90mm PVC air intake to go with my panel dropped my 1/4 mile time 0.25 and increased terminal speed by an average of 2mph :)

I'll stick with my panel for now (plus im not a fan of pod filter noise)

Oh yeah!... the pics.. sorry, I forgot! I think I need to clean my engine bay

That K&N cleaning kit works well... it was quite dirty as you can see in the dismantled pic then after a clean it came up pretty ok.

errrrrrrrrr..... isn't this just attaching a pod to the MAF? u needed a kit to do it? i did it without a kit...

HyperTF
04-03-2005, 05:53 PM
Errrrr, it was mainly an adaptor plate between MAF and pod... it was simple... so sue me! lol

HyperTF

Yes I dug this thread up again... why, so I can point people to my progress in one thread rather than over several.

Anyway, I have taken the pod back off, and replaced it with the panel again... I miss the sound ( ) but not the power loss... no point running it a bit crap just for a better note.

I did notice a slight gain in speed on the flat back on the K&N panel, especially second gear were I have a bit of a flat spot below 2000 RPM... but the pod certainly did have gains, like in going up hills on WOT, I don't feel the surge as much now.

So what's the plan now? I intend now to build a custom box to house, and secure the pod, and run piping down below the engine... I am not putting the pod down there (cos I cant be stuffed cleaning it that frequently).

After this I will get the EManage retuned (somewhere!), serviced, dyno'd then hopefully take her back down to Calder, to get a decent time. This is all dependant on time of course (that of which I have less of these days :boohoo: )

Then I will rethink what I do with the car... leave it alone... rebore and build... cams... whatever.

p.s. Before I get the PM's... No I am not selling anything lol ;)

Oh and yes the pod did get bloody hot, so much so that when I took it to the drags I had to leave the bonnet up as much as I could to try to get the heat out of there (track temp over 40 degrees)... so yeah, not good... it was hot to touch. I knew that was going to happen anyway, just not quite that much!

OOOH!! i cant wait for you to finish the CAI.

I would be doing something about my pod but right now its sitting on my table not my car

Well i ill be looking into how u made yours and what it looks like and the cost and when i get my car back to actually put the pod back in ill try to *cough* copy you*cough* or at least get an idea for mine. :D

Well I have been reading this thread with interest (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16732) and EZ Boy's other thread on the nice work he has done, but although Acrylic has the rigidity, I am going to look at a different grade of plastic with the hope to really reduce the chance of heat getting in there... I am hoping to find some high density polyethylene (HDPE) but I will just have to see what I can get my hands on. It will be an interesting project.
