Hey I've got a TJ Exec which has been lowered, but still has mud guards all round... They keep scraping on speed bumps and gutters and I want to get rid of them. I unscrewed one of them the other day and tried to pull it off, but found theres actually some kind of rubber strip holding it onto the side of the car :( How are you supposed to get these things off without ruining the car?

its not a rubber strip its rubber mastic - a sort of sealer. Firmly and steadily pull off the mudflap (some of them have 3 screws including one under the sill - you did unscrew all of them didn't you). The black goo (the mastic) that's left on the body cleans off with turps or a spray with WD40 or RP7 type lubricants, then wash down when clean with normal car wash.

My pleasure - I did this to mine a couple of months back - they look so much better without the Farmer-style Flaps!

I'm contemplating taking mine off too... was just wondering though - do you guys find you get quite a bit of dirt and road grime up the side of your cars with out the mud flaps?

This guy does. I have nice two-tone muddies. Yes, car is lowered and they scrap whenever I go round the Great ocean roads curves briskly. lol lol

mine have been off for ages and ive never had a problem with dirt streaks up the sides. I usually drive around the 'burbs so if you were in the country with unmade roads and stuff you might have a problem.

Have seen some base "country" cars with sandblasting the bottom sides of the rear bumper & side sills (about midway of front door).

the Jap spec Diamante mudflaps don't have the bottom inch or so on them so they're a much more elegant solution. You can see how the Oz ones have an additional moulding put on them to make them longer. But this is all forgetting that one of the great benefits of the Magna as a touring car is its fine 0.27 - 0.29 drag coefficient - what these darn Oz flaps do to that I cannot imagine. If you live anywhere short of constant dirt roads - take them off - leave them off I say.
