Hi - I know being a female we like a bit of vibration but would I like to fix this problem!!! lol when I brake the steering wheel (and column) vibrate BUT only occassionly mainly when on a downhill angle. Also when the steering wheel is turned right slighly it has a light clunk. Steering column?? Are the two related? We thought the vibrating was a warped disk but then it would vibrate EVERY time we braked ??? (and it doesn't)

possible causes are:
warped or rusty brake disk (sometimes only noticable under light or hard braking)
wheel out of balance (this is usually noticed between 80 and 100kph)
wear in the steering linkages or suspension (this can amplify a vibration caused by a disk or a wheel)

does this only happen on an angle ?
or could be an engine mount ?

possible causes for the vibration. warped disc, worn pads, hot spots on the disc. to check for hot spots just look for black spots on the disc. to fix this u can get them machined for about $20 a wheel. this will fix the problem provided its not to bad.
the clunk when steering is more than likely caused by loose or worn bushes in the front end. my mate is a mechanic for the cops and when they get this problem all they do is just go over all the bolts and tighten them and it goes away. had the same problem with y last car, tightened all the bolts, all was good again.

Thanks for the feedback.
It does seem to happen when on a slight angle (not that steep though). And it seems to happen when doing about 40-50 and slow braking. When on the highway, can't notice it at all. A couple of times it has actually been so noisy that my 5 yr old, thinks it sounds great and wants it to do it all the time
Were quoted around $800 and told it was the streering column, that it was common in the TH and that if it is fixed it could always come back again.
The reason I'm asking everyones opinion is - we had a problem in our commodore where it would clunk everytime we went around a round-a-bout. We took the car to a well known suspension company for a quote and they said it would cost $1800 to fix and that there were about 6 things causing it. When our car was in getting serviced our mechanic found the problem and it cost us $30 labour as it was a loose Gearbox mount and just needed tightning. Therefore after hearing your opinions will take to our mechanic to see what he says. Not that I don't trust Mitsubishi! Need to save some money if possible! Plus don't want 200 angry replys!!

I own a 96 TE 3L
i also have the vibrations and it ****s me, it only ever happens when i brake hard from 90-180km/h, i dont dare to brake hard when im going over 180, its got standard suspension and it jumps around like a drunk mexican.
my only thoughts about the brakes is upgrade the calipers, rotors, and pads, and lines
crazy or correct ???

What sort of Vibration is it? Vertical? Lateral? Light Torsional (shimmy)? Strong Torsional (shudder)?
If it was a Verticle vibration, it is most likely doe to worn shocks, worn engine mount, and other less likely causes, like rotor, wheel balance. etc.
If it was a Lateral vibration, you've got a Big problem with your rack and pinion (Shouldn't happen often)
If it was a shimmy, it could very well just be general wear and tear of the suspension, wheel alignment/balance and brakes, check alignment and balance then check pads.
If it was a Shudder, you most likely have DTV on the rotor otherwise very out of alignment wheels.
Effects of unbalance doesn't come in during braking as there are other higher energy sources.
i have a bit of a shudder i think its most likely the wheel alignment tho who knows.. it only happens between 70-80 kms however if u power through that range u dont feel it... if u drive trhough it or sit on it for a while it starts to shudder

Alignment wouldn't cause that problem, it's balancing that you need.

Hi
Just a quick update. Took it into a tyre place wont name names, they checked it and told me my disks where totally worn and needed replacement immediately, that they had been machined to many times. And that my front brake pads were 90% worn and also needed replacing. Quoted $360.00.
Decided to take it to my "trustworthy" mechanic on the Gold Coast, they machined down the disks, (apparently they had been machined before!!) also my brake pads were only 20% worn and didn't need replacing.
Since then haven't had a problem, no more shudder!!! m Cost me $85.
Rang back the tyre place and asked did I walk into their shop with "sucker" tattooed onto my forehead or was it that I was a female that they decided to try and rip me off.
Just goes to show sometimes it pays to get a second opinion or be a BLOKE!!!!!!
