Ever since the defensive driving course last Sunday, my fuel consumption has been pretty nasty. I know that the ECU adapts to your driving habits and adjusts accordingly, but how quick does it adjust itself?
eg. Is one day of hard driving enough to put it in 'yea sure, feel free to use all my fuel today' mode? And how long do I have to 'behave' before it resumes to 'sunday driver' mode?
Thanx.

Probably take as long as it needs, the quickest way to go back to sunday driver mode is to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for few minutes and then start her and leave her in idle for at least 5mins.

it will not be due to this, the ECU learns by changing the gears a little later and that is about it. what could it possible do to the motor to make fuel econ change. i think you might need to unplug for 30 minutes and reset your right foot, its getting carried away :)

The ecu never changes due to driving habits hey, it adjusts as you go by the milisecond, you flog it it goes into open loop mode, drops the o2 sensor and pours fuel in, you cruise and closed loop mode kicks back in a fuel economy returns, the only bit that "learns" your driving habits is the auto if you have one, it learns to hold gears longer and or kickdown more readily.
So, maybe check your o2 sensor, or rather get someone else to check it if it's that much worse even with regular driving.

This is completely off the topic but where did you do the defensive driving course?
How much did it cost?

Hold the mode button in for a few seconds this will reset the trip computer no need to disconnect the battery unless you want to reset the whole ecu

That won't reset where the ECU changes gears... just the dashboard computer...

I dont think you read that properly i said it would only reset the trip computer and to reset the ecu disconnect the battery  if you reset the trip computer and drive normaly it will re adjust the average fuel to your type of driving.... i reset the trip computer every time i fill up my car

Yah, like the man above said.... Light-foot time. Just 'coast' everywhere for a while, light throttle inputs to keep her rolling around about the appropriate speed limit. If auto, you may also need to force her up a gear as she'll be holding onto the lower ones longer than necessary. You can still be brisk-ish off the line as long as you are then prepared to tottle along.

ur ECU learns to drive after u've driven it, holding gears and whatnot i remember after my altnerator was rebuilt the had obviously taken off the battery and when i got it back it would rev to about 3 half grand and change, after awhile same pressure would get it upto 4700
the driving was so different when i got it back, i thought they fugged something up and after a couple of days everything went back to normal (me planting foot that is)
