Making their own body kit or components etc from fibreglass.

Any avid Fibreglassers out there?

The Mrs tells me to leave the car alone :doubt: and get a hobby. She suggested art. I like art. I'd like to express my artistic talent and make a body kit for my Magna. Doh! lol

Yes you can do it yourself but to do a spot on job will take alot of patience and 100's of hours (so my wife tells me  ) to produce a top job. :)

you would have to use fibreglass or something similar to get the strength and lightness and all that id say, not that i know anythign about it at all

Your game to work fibreglass , have you done it before, there is a fibreglass place in Newcastle, its at broadmedow near the golf joint that just shut down, accros from Gonninans, they should be able to supply with all you'll need, possibly,

I wouldnt think it worth the effort for such a dangerous job that stuff will kill you if not worked properly. Maybe there is another material you could use to craft a bodykit.

You can use anything that will do the job eg : polyurethane foam ( my favorite is surfboard blank) cardboard, steel (the inner skin moulds for our S/skirts are steel and wood) and timber. :D
The hardest part is to get every thing even from one side to the other which takes untold templets and t i i i me. Your kit is only as good as your moulds .You can do one offs just don't break it or all your hard work is   Always use disposible gloves when using resins and the hardener (catylst) MEKP is nasty stuff like if you get a bit in your eyes you have approx 10 seconds to get it out (read lots of water) before your eyes are damaged. I don't want to put you off all Iam saying is be informed and have fun :)

ok cool, i remember making a game console controller out of high density foam with wood putty around it to make it all hard, was the coolest :)

so could make a base mould out of some timber, with a few add ons stuck on with foams n stuffs, then i could alwasy take it too a bodykit place in perth n get them to make up the kit for me... hmm intriguing

i want VIP kit for my car

When you make your shape like you did with the high density foam you can then glass over that then use auto bog over that then sand that until you're happy with what you've got then take a mould off it :)

OK I know the pics on fastmagna don't do the kit justice and as Velocity said once he saw the kit in the flesh he wished he'd got the whole kit.( PM him ) You should have no probs with the S/skirts for clearance as they are higher than the chassis rails under the car. The white verada only took 4 Hrs sitting on the road side to sell and it pulled looks like you wouldn't believe  .

cheers

hmmm....i might pay my uncle to make me upa front kit, but i would have to design it, that could take a while....silver_bullet has a nuts front bar for the TS
The only thing about making your own bar is if it cracks

I built the verada kit but only had requests for magna kits so hence I bought a magna and adapted the kit and as said before didn't even try to sell the magna and I had 3 people wanting it, so unfortunately I have not done another verada kit only magnas. The verada is in Busselton but has been badly neglected  but it turned heads from guys in HSV's to Mercs and Audi's

Any plans on making a 2nd gen kit?
I know a guy was making one but havn't heard anything. I was nearly going to try and make one, got to the point of picking up the fibreglassing stuff at autobarn but after special consideration and thinking, i dont wanna blow $100 cuz i really dont have a clue what i'm doing lol. I had a crazy idea once of making side skirts out of pvc piping, i could see it looking alright, modded well enough. or just get a long rectangular piece of plastic and cut it on a diagonal and stick that on the side, could look ok.

hmm do you have any idea of how much it would cost me to get it painted the color of the car in my avatar as its mine. And where is busselton? Also any chance of me getting sponsered if i get one of your kits? As my car is starting to smick up a fair bit and turns heads for a verada.

Do you have any mates that know how to spray paint ? If you do you'll save big$$ as spray painting isn't that hard :) . Ixnay got a price to paint one of our kits the other day and that was $800 (dark metallic green) If you can drive down a freeway and have people slowing down and looking over their shoulders checking out your ride and the same at traffic lights as they go across then yeah I Know what you mean. I do have most of a verada kit here so PM me if your'e interested

I'm making a spoiler out of fibreglass for my gen1... very easy to do - i just hate the smell of epoxy resin...

i was thinking of taking a mould of my bumpers, changing the mould and making a nice bodykit for my gen1. all depends on money though

i got suspension & steering to fix, and i gotta buy paint - i got patches of primer all over where i was cutting rust out.

To do a average job is pretty easy,(but it makes your car look average too ) but to do a top job is very time consuming as when you are working to a couple of mm tolerance say from one S/skirt to the other it's alot harder, but ah you have to start somewhere lol

yeh im worried about a lot of things, money being the biggest one, lol

yeh im used to the TB now, only annoying when you wanna reverse slowly but apart from that seems a bit better on the take off, just need a shift kit now (how did you go with the electronics). Only thing was cause the TB you gave me was a newer one it would of been sucking air in through the extra hole in it but i have since blocked this off when my old man pointed it out to me.

just need a shift kit now (how did you go with the electronics).

Having problems with this at present. The INVECS2 gearbox has no economy/power mode - it selects it automatically dependant on driving style and conditions etc. SO it looks like it runs 2 maps for the transmission. My shift kit couldn't handle the map changes and would apply my programmed adjustments to the altered map for some VERY BAZAAR transmission activity!! It was scary!

Im making up my ownkit in a month or two...
will be for Te-TH..maybe can be modded to TJ
Will be a full replacement front bar and guards.. a bonnet
side skirts, a FULL rear bar.. not just skirt. and rear flares. the word of the day is WIDE BODY :D

I went and did a fibreglass course at TAFE (Tech) cost a few hundred $$ but gives you some good practice.. I also did some free work for a body shop to get some more experiance.

Really good to see someone who's going to have a go. If you need any advice feel free to PM me with any query's. Remember take your time as what you make as a plug is what all your kits will be like if your going to take a mould  :)
