View Full Version : TJ AWD trans delay?

Hi all,

I picked up a TJ AWD a couple months ago and have noticed that there's quite a delay when shifting between reverse and drive. I notice it most when in carparks or doing a 3 point turn. Any other AWD owners notice the same? If it's a problem with the trans I want to sort it out while under warranty. Could be simply different to the Commodore I'd been driving previously.

cheers

Hilly

Not that I've noticed in mine, but I've never been in that much of a hurry when reversing directions. How long is your delay?

I've noticed the Triptronic takes 1-1.5 sec to respond after command, especially when driven hard - ok following a friendly manual MX-5 through the corners a few times.... the other guy usually wins. :( How're you finding the AWD anyway?

I'd say the delay is in the order of 1-1.5 sec. I just started the car and I think it's more noticeable when it's cold and the idle revs are up a bit. It's not that it's a problem it's just that I've never noticed any delay in other autos I've owned or driven. I doubt that it's a problem with the trans, it had only done 29k when it got. As I said I'd like to sort any potential problems while it's still under warranty so I wanted some feedback from other owners.

As for the AWD I love it. You can forget about road conditions. Wet,dry, sealed or dirt makes no difference. And it's so neutral when you push it a bit in the hills. Go in hard, brake late and punch it out early and it doesn't hint at wanting to change direction. I can see me ever buying a 2WD again. I believe we are down a bit in straight line performance on our FWD brothers but it's got enough grunt for me. The tiptronic doesn't completely repalace a manual but comes close. I just have to be carefull when I jump in the wife's Camry on a wet day :)

Looks like we've got another AWD addict here!! :D

I'm running a custom CAI, enclosed pod, 3" exhaust, tranny cooler and got away from a VX Supercharged Calais both of us doing about 30km rolling start onto a roundabout. I had my window down and heard him kickback, so naturally I did the same. His s/c sounded bloody nice but just couldn't save the day for him.

But I do agree that the extra 200kg hurts us a bit. But for the balance and ride who cares (for now....)

Start saving for a supercharger kit!!

Oh, how rude of me: Welcome to the Party!

Thanks for the welcome. I saw your post on the s/c calais. The rolling start would have saved him further embarassment I'm sure. No point having the extra Kw if you can't put it on the black stuff.

Hilly & EZ Boy, what sort of fuel consumption are you getting out of your AWDs? I'm averaging 13.1L/100km City and 11 Hwy using normal unleaded fuel. I've heard of 2001 TJ FWD magnas doing 7.2 Hwy.

Thats excellent.... the AWDs makes me feel so ungreen but it's a great drive.

I'll get about 8.0 on the freeway and about 12.0 around town, add another 1.0 if the a/c is on.

Getting 7.0L on the highway for a TJ is a big push, im a property valuer so i tend to find some weeks im mostly doing city driving and other weeks im 95% highway drivivng.

My fuel consumption for the TJ VRX 5 speed Manual is usually 11.5 City 10 Highway. This will always vary from person to person, I tend to have a heavy foot from time to time :D

I have 50:50 Hwy:City and average 11.1 with regular flogging with P platers from Edgeworth to Thornton. I'm happy with that. I use the aircon heaps too.

Before the CAI, Pod and exhaust, my average was 11.6.

Hi All,

I'm (very) new to these forums so excuse the naiivity. What is a CAI? I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the abbreviations....

Cheers.

EZ Boy where did you get your tranny cooler? How much was it and did it make a difference?

I got mine from RPW in my more niave days of ownership. Price was about $140ish from memory (which is failing more on a daily basis). The postage and f'ing around with Australia Post was the $$$killer. Any auto crowd like Repco, Autobarn etc can supply them.

I don't believe there are model specific coolers or set sizing. Mine is about 450-500mm x 150mm roughly. I could go another one I reckon. I mounted in on the radiator at the front lefthand side. See pic.

You can see my cai pickup just below the cooler.

It doesn't really matter where you intercept the transmission to radiator hose to insert the cooler, just as long as its IN THE LOOP!

I believe it made the shifts faster and more so on hot days when it can just take forever getting into or out of a tight car park space.

PM me if you need help fitting.

I laugh at how often I get asked if that's an intercooler for my turbo. I simply reply "I haven't got a Turbo but I'd still like to be blown."

Thanks, I will have to look into it down the track a bit. Was you flowed throttle body from RPW too? I had one on my TE but it looks so easy to do especially for $220 as I could probably get a spare one and grind that down for that money. I wish RPW were easier to deal with (i.e. not waiting six months for everything).

there are some pretty cheap kits on the internet and ebay which might be worth a look :D

slow gear changes are caused by the little fat, bald man sitting in your gearbox. He has to push his clutch in and move his lever. When its really cold or really hot, obviously he shifts slower...he's dying!
