I was just wondering what are the differences of sound these hydraulic tappets and timing chain makes when they rattle/click.
My TS magna is making a very distictive sound thats gotten worse, because it used to only make it when idling or reving below 1000 but now it seems to do it at 2500. And for some reason it's very quite when it's cold but once it warms up it starts with the noise.
And i've also heard of the eliminator kit for the balance shaft to get rid of the timing chain noise, but is it really worth the $600? And how much would it be to fix the hydrolic tappets if it is that?
Should i still be trying to repair my magna or am i better off looking for a new car?

i dunno much about this situation but i have been told by my local mechanic that it will cost 1500 to replace the timing chain, he told me it involves pulling out the whole motor in order to replace it, got me thinking a bit about buying a new car aswell....

Bugger, $1500 to replace a timing chain? and pulling the motor out to do it?? I have a V6 TS, but it doesnt have the chain, it has a timing belt, it only cost me $500 bucks to replace, that was with its major 100,000k service recently!! I don't know if its the same kinda job specs involved with the 4cyl chains and V6 belts, am not a mechanic!!
My lifters are pretty noisey in my car, first start in the morning it's good, but when car is warm, it ticks a bitt, Ive had the lifters replaced, but the noise came back after 6-12mths, so since its not affecting the performance of the car, i'll put up with it.. But im in the process of changing oil! Magnatec actually made mine alot worse...! The funny thing is, I own a 1994 V6 Manual sedan, and a 1996 V6 Auto sedan (both since brand new) they both have the exact oil put in it, both are still serviced under mitsubishi, and both have the same driving pattens! The 94 magna is as quiet as a mouse, always has been, while the 96, ticks and has engine noise, and does stupid auto changes from time to time, always has been!!

$1500 is a little expensive for timing chain. I was quoted at $1300 from mitsu along with a complete service and several other little things but in the end got a mate who worked for the same mitsu to do it out of work hours for a grand even with a whole heap of other crap thrown in.
as for tappets yeh they suck balls, mine are noisey as. im gonna try and replace them all tomorrow. see how it goes.
If you want more info about either timing chains or tappets then do a search of the forum coz they are the 2 most common problems on the old 4cyl really and there is HEAPS or stuff about them.

any good with a spanner? ive changed the timing chain on an astron and its definatly not 1500 dollars worth. and can be done in the car.

definately not $1500. i got a whole timing chain kit for $220 from repco for my TM's astron. yours will be alittle more expensive i assume as the timing chain assemblys are alittle different in the 2nd gen astrons.
u CAN replace the timing chain and guides etc in the car, but it's heaps easier out of the car.
all u need to do is take the head off and take the timing chain cover off the side and u can see the whole assembly. in the timing chain assembly kit, all guides/tensioners and gaskets are provided aswell as the timing chain itself. usually it is the guides that are stuffed which makes the chain slightly loose and gives u the noise.
u will however need to buy another head gasket. around $40 or so for a decent one if i remember correctly. it is very easy to replace the timing chain assembly. it's just a matter of taking off the old piece, and replacing it with the new. just make sure that u scrape the old gasket off and clean the surface so the new gasket and work properly. gasket goo comes in handy aswell.

In that case, has anyone heard of the balance shaft eliminator kit? the machanics said once install it won't be problematic ever again. How long does the timing chain last for anyways before i have to change it again?

For starters the head does NOT have to come off.
The the TM - TP the job is easy enough to do in the car but TR and TS although can be done in car it is better to remove.
I did Lethals about a year or so ago, also changed welsch plugs, clutch, all lash adjusters, gaskets, seals timing chain etc. Was under a grand.
For $1500.00, you could drive to Adelaide, get me to do it and spend a couple nights in a motel and still have change lol
The Kit is about the $160.00 mark, the eliminator set about $55.00 (these prices are bout a year old) Lash adjusters are about $19.00 each (need 8). I prefer to remove the motor, bring it iver and I will do the whole job for $630.00 I will be willing to remove the motor, change these bits, new oil, oil filter, trans fluid and coolant, and out you up for a couple nights here :) (this providing the prices are still about the same)
It is also a good time of course to chage other bits, if the car itself is in reasonable condition it will add to resale not to mention add to relaibility.

Well I took my car back to the mechanic today coz the lifters are getting more noisey, the ticking is really starting to give me the ****s!!!
They where all replaced bitt over 1yr ago by Mitsubishi (charged me about $900 then), motor was quiet for ages, but now the ticking is gradually getting louder again!! This car is treated like a baby, and I can't stand listening to that noise again lol.. I was quoted $440 to replace them all (not Mitsubishi this time)!! So it's booked in for next week, and they are gonna look into why, and whats causing the lifters to wear out so quickly, stuffed if I no!! It's never ever low on oil, gets regulary serviced, and has really low K's for the age of the car...! My finger is being pointed at the ppl who last did the lifters, which is a real big story behind all that!!!

Driving to addy is way out of the question, not to in the cruising mood with that noisy engine, but thanks heaps for the offer madmagna. I'm still waiting for some sign of whether to fix the engine or not, but right now i'm not seeing much life in the car so i think i'll just have to let it skip.
I got the car really cheap so i'm not too worried about resale value, all i'm hoping for now is for it to last me another 2 years and i'll be laughing...
