Hey all,
its time to upgrade/change the current stereo system. I have been told JL subs are pretty good. Does anyone know a good cheap place to purchase JL subs, I am looking for 10" single 4 ohmn coils.
Thanx guys/gals

JL is one of the top of the line audio companies. JBL is kinds down below a bit in comparison...
Im selling a pair of JL 12" 4ohm's, but im in vic and you probably wouldnt wanna bother with postage.

JBL is more into live audio... Their forte is their huge PA speakers...
They make some good quality gear nevertheless. I have JBL 6x9's and used to run JBL 4.5" in my old car.
JB Hifi retails JL subs.

Yeah JL is better, the whole G uni crew uses them, and they looked quite mad on cribs.
JL Audio do make fantastic subs but for a similar price you can get better such as Image Dynamics, RE Audio, Diamond and Boston. :)

From the original question if you want to save money, you dont go JL, JL is one of the most consident and best brand of subs on the market. I recently bought 2 x JL w3 subs and that was upgrading from a rockford 15" (I regard rockford at the top, but JL nearly on par!). I am getting very big bass but take into account the box is as important and amp, firstly i would get a well made ported box ( = more bass) and a good amp to run them. If anyone bags JL in they have no idea about Car Audio! You pay for the quality! :)

I have 2 10" JBL's in the boot. They pretty good subs IMO I just need a better amp for them.
I bought them from Strathfeild but im not sure if they still have the same ones in stock.
This is my sub woofer box. I had to flip it so i could take the pic :)

Your talking about the wrong subs! We are talking about JL AUDIO not JBL! Your comparing Top of the line to an average line!

I have no doubt there are a couple of audiophiles on here who'd disagree with JL being quite at the top of the line ;)

Well please give me a reason why? and what is better? Also if you read correctly i said one of the top of the line! JL has had the same line of subs, just re-introduced them for many years now! I would like to see what brands you reccommend!

Yeah JL has some good advertising, but just another decent american sub brand in the end.
They do have very light cones and do not take a lot to get them going, so are good for getting loud of very little power...

These would blow the JL's and the rockfords out of the water sq wise...
Old school stuff... = Strokers Still on par (and over) some of the best modern gear.
Then SPL you can't go past the DD's
JL is really nothing special. Good quality gear, but not audiophile material.
A good sub no doubt, but it is sold by places like JB hifi who are big chains... But are hardly die hard audio enthusiast / audiophile shops.
Sorry dude... They are a lot like BOSE is to home audio. Lots of good advertising. Especially in the American market. Popularised by the 'gangstas' who deck their cars out in them. But meh...
nevertheless I wouldnt knock one back.

I don't recommend anything lol I ask Fhrx (http://www.fhrxstudios.com/) and let him be my spiritual guide.
I'm sure JL are good. I've never heard one. I'm really just messing with you, dude
haha, if only i could afford a XXX i'd get one. i'll stay and be contempt with my DD. Its no where as punchy but plays so much lower and louder than the 2 12s i used to have. I'm happy with its response, not as bad as i thought...i can actually listen to rock and jazz(my genre of music..and i like it more and more everyday)

Yeah hows that going Eek... I half expected tragic results... But good to see you're happy with it. What's powering it again? How do your fronts keep up?
I'm on the hunt for a re XXX 10"... Want some good low end response and the 10" 's get lower than the 12's. They can handle a heap so won't be a problem with volume.
Will be a while till i can get the funds up. Theres a distributer of Brahmas down the road, I wanna go pick his brains one day. He's meant to have some pretty good box building programs... (besides winisd... ;))

Dude you are a lil bit anti-america in your opinion, i never said that JL was the end all! thats wat the forum is about! there is a lot out there that is very good, but for you to say JL's subs are nothing special is saying you have NO IDEA! As for the america comment, if you ask majority of ppl in the industry, where a lot of the best stuff comes from you will get the USA very hard to beat at No. 1! About JB HiFi, other stores stock it and if you knew that much you wouldnt make a comment like that because a lot of stores TRY to get it and cant! Next your gonna say Rockford is Average and i would say you know about AVERAGE on the topic!

Ok random... I'm not bagging America at all... DD is an American Brand which I just praised. IMO the greatest SPL brand in the world
Just opening ur eyes to some other gear that isnt retailed as widely as stuff in JB or Autobarn.
Get out and have a listen first...
Edit: And mate no need to kick up a fuss, I'm sure many people here would agree with you that I know nothing at all about car audio... And am running my Sony walkman as my car audio right now...

This just in, Kofi Annan today authorised the deployment of UN peace keepers into the Australian Magna Club Car Audio forums after rebels bucked popular opinion on the relative merits of an, as yet unnamed, brand of car audio equipment, and fighting broke out... News at 11.

i wouldn't say JL and rockford aren't average, because they make a whole range of stuff ranging from entry level to comp leve, pros use. As a general concensus, these brands probably have a lower 'rating' than other brands like xxx, bramahs, diamond audio, xtant, image dynamics, dyna audio, focals, phoenix gold etc. Good brands none the less, its just that i would say there are a lot of other brands out there which are better  But hey....we get what we can afford.
EDIT: hell...i have a DD sub and phoenix gold amps. I like america

Dont get me wrong you have named some incredibly good brands but to say JL is average i just dont agree with that. And dealing with a lot of pros in car audio they would disagree with you also.
I cant stand the JB's and Audiobarn's they have got no idea about Car Audio but i guess JL is connected. I have found rockford to be very hard to beat in terms of Amps and Speakers. Fair point there is different levels but overall hard to beat.
Everyone has there opinions to what has worked best for them, all i can say is there is a lot of high quality products but on the other hand too much crap i.e sony
How many watts are going through ur dd eek? What have u got up front
phoenix gold qx900.1d running the DD, it does around 1100wrms
phoenix gold qx300.4 60wrms x 4 ...probably a bit more in real life. I have PHoenix gold 6.5" Octane ZR splits up front...at about 80,90Hz
I like phoenix gold :D
I'm still to tune all the stuff, coz i just finished my amp rack, and connected the wires up so i could have music to listen to. i haven't had music to listen to for nearly a month.

Yerp many would agree with the Sony car audio problems... They make some good stuff, but speakers and subs... Ouch... They make some excellent electronics and are a great company, but Car audio... Damn... It saddens me to see any Sony showcar... lol
Every brand has their top of the line gear. And most have their middle and lower range stuff... as Eek pointed out.
JL is a good brand, as is Rockford. I'm not denying that. IMO the best subs that are sold by the major commercial retail markets in Melbourne would be JL.
In a worldwide sense there are many more smaller brands out there that customise their gear to a certain market. With that comes price.
In terms of SQ competition The RE's and Brahma's etc have proven themselves. And of course the DD's in SPL
Eek - Yeah PG is cool, my mates got 2 12's in his gemini... Tantrums from memory. They hurt my brain though... He drives around like he's in an spl comp as a daily driver. Also has 8" Hertz in the doors in a three way setup. Ooh check it... *Digs up pics* He did all the pods himself. Drools*

I think my fronts can handle lower.....i still have a lot of tuning to do. before i plugged in teh sub, I had them running full range...or well, down to about 40hz, and they sounded bloody awesome!

I'll bet...
Tuning is fun... But all my knobs and switches for my crossovers are in the boot. So everytime i stop the car i have to tweak this and that. I guess the stuff isnt 'installed' yet so I should just run some extra long rca's into the cabin.
a few pics...dont' want to give too much away atm :P

Just for anyone who wishes to buy a JL 12w0, they actually perform better in a 1.5cuft sealed box then any other sealed / ported box according to a few SPL nuts on CCA.

Damn! That gemini has speakers in spots I wouldn't of dreamed about!
Are the two on the parcel shelf facing forward subs? I like that idea, anyway! That'll be next on the uprgrade list... right after I get my front left Pioneer 6" working properly... and not a minute before my wife says I can spend MORE money on a friggin' car stereo (she's already peeved that the stereo cost more than the car).

Two on the parcel shelf are hertz esk's. Just 6" splits. He only just put them in.
U should hear this thing... Crazy..
He's also sourcing a lpg turbo system for his gem. Nice set of wheels there.
Eek, looking really sweet... The cats out of the bag now.
Keep up the good work.
Mmm Blue... Mmm Chrome.
Guess that's why u were after the plain black amp.
Stupid newbie question...
What sort of amp would i need to power a 10" 600W sub? 600W 2 channel?
s_tim_ulate
24-02-2005, 04:05 PM
What sub is it? Anymore specs?
Is 600 w peak power? ( I think it is by the sounds) Peak power is irrelevent really
You got the rms rating of it? This is of much more significance
For amps you can go a monoblock = 1 channel designed for subs.
Or a 2 channel and bridge the channels to make one channel
In terms of power rating it depends how loud you want to go. You generally dont want to push an amp to it's potential as this leads to distortion. You want to give as much 'headroom' as possible so the amp might only be using 3/4 of it's power at it's peak. This will ensure u protect your gear and dont get any clipping/distortion from driving it beyond it's capabilities.
In terms of the sub, if it is a 600 w rms sub you would want to feed it around 500 w rms to still get some nice tunes. Anywhere down to 100 w rms if you just want to get some extra bass in there.
Peace
Tim
Pic of it attached. Bought it off ebay, with the description 600W power...
wouldn't really matter what amp you buy. personally, i'd go for the most power i could afford (decent brand...not, 4000watts of audioline power). As long as u set the gains right, u could power it off a nuclear power station
s_tim_ulate
24-02-2005, 05:22 PM
Looks to me like a kenwood copy.
600 w will be a peak power figure unless they specified otherwise. Don't waste money on too much power. 400 w rms would be plenty. Then adjust the gains right.
