hey guys, picked up my new 16's yesterday and got them on the car. I will post pics tonight hopefully if i get time. Just one question:
My old tires are 185/60/R14 and my new ones are 215/60/R16. I've used tire checker and apparently my speedo is out by 15% now, i've worked out speeds and such but is there anything wrong with this? is 185/60/R14 standard? cuz it seems when i'm doing the speed limit (actually doing 15% more apparently) cars are still keeping up with me and sometimes even passing me and it doesn't seem like i'm going that much faster (feels like i'm only about 5% out, but maybe i'm  ). Maybe they're speeding i dunno. Thanks.

Doesnt it mean that your speedo is reading 15% faster than what you're going?
Hence you're going slower?

Sorry Killbilly, I have to disagree, if you went from a smaller overall diameter to a larger overall diameter, your speedo will read slower than what you're going. so if the change was 15%, then at a indicated speedo reading of 100, your real on road speed is or should be near 115.
What you might want to do to be sure is have a drive on one of the major freeways exiting Melbourne that has a speed detection device (i know of one to Geelong, and one heading to Heathcote). and just drive at 100 and see what the real laser reading is picking you up on.
cheers

Yeh the diameter is bigger and so takes longer to turn and so the car thinks i'm going slower than what i really am. Yeh i been looking for those laser thingos but none near me, without being attached to a copper :bowrofl: . The main thing i'm worried about is the legality. So far had no issues with scrapage apart from if i have the wheel on hard right/left lock and i go over a bump, but im hardly ever in that position and if i am, i'm going slow so it's not gonna cause any major trouble.
ANYWAY, here's some pics :D :
P.S. Yeh i coulda cropped the images around the car but meh, what ya gonna do.

hehe yeh, thanks to you!
Also forgot to mention i put a chrome tow ball on there :P. I had to reward my car for that hyundai excel that hit me ages ago, not bad for $10.

why didn't you remove the towball and harness from the chassis. unless of course you tow things. it weights about 30kg

Whyd u take the pics soo damn far?? i cant see them properly..
are those the verarda rims u wanted? i cant even tell its soo far.
yea ur speedo will be wayy off man, id replace the tyres soon.. do they have good tread? maybe u can sell em or somethin..
anyway, looks better then the chrome hubcaps.

yeah they look like Verada rims to me (because I have the same ones on my TS).
And yes if you're speedo shows 60 on a 60k zone, you are speeding. I find that when i drive the 2nd gen with the upgraded wheels I can keep up with traffic. If I drive my 3rd gen with it's stock size wheels I have everyone passing me, that just shows the number of people who speed on our roads! No wonder P-platers get really annoyed.

is there a way to fix this problem? like resseting the ECU or reprogramming it? I was thinking if u had a chip it may fix it cos they can alter anything cant they>

i think the speed sensor is seperate from the ecu. the ecu just reads the speed, not control it in any way.
but yea, the only way to fix the problem is a speedo re-calibration. which ive Heard costs anywhere up to $250? ive just heard this i dont know for a fact.
either way, its not worth it, just get the right tyres.
is your wing darker than the car? or is it just me?

yeah but just say i got 18's on my car (not saying i would) i would be lots out so wouldnt that 250 save me losing my P's when i get them?
i dnt think its anything to do with the ECU, all u need to do is reconfigure the speedo... and sum1 can finish that sentence off coz i dunno how to yet...

if you get 18's, you get a tyre with a smaller profile height to compensate for the larger rim, so that the overall rolling diameter is the same as the stock wheels.
What TR-ENV has is 16s with tyre thats not meant for his particulat car. The profile height is bigger than it should be.
The tyre on his 16's are 215/60/16, if he puts 215/50/16 his speedo will not be out.
basically, if your going to increase the rim size, you need to decrease the tyre height. If that is done correctly, you will have no speedo problems :)

this might help
:disgusted this is what tr-env has now

It isn't that bad really, you just have to know how much to compensate your speed.
The problem is finding affordable 215/50's. My intended plan was to go 225/50's but the rubber is too big for a 6" rim, well it will fit but it isn't recommended as you will loose a bit of steering control.
By the way if you know your electronics, you can fit a simple resistor with a correctly determined value that will adjust the voltage coming out from the speedo sensor.

sounds confusing, so if i get 17's or 18;s then basically ill have to compenstae my speed? or should u get that speedo fixer thingy?

Hey Leigh  makes a difference eh!... but yeah... he he some closer pics would be great... my eyesight ain't as good as it used to be lol It's really coming along.
Why don't you find a quiet piece of road with two lanes and get a friend/parent to drive next to you doing the speed limit (assuming theirs is right lol) over various ranges (60 and 80 for example) and see what yours is doing to match it... ok not very accurate but it might give you an idea roughly for the meantime until you can get the right tyres or a speedo check etc
Might rest your mind a bit for the now

compensate your tyre size.
if u have the right sized tyre, you wont need to fix your speedo or anything. your speedo will be accurate.

Compensating tyre size is the best option, but once again you will come to the $$$$ factor.
Best bet is to skip 16" rims and go straight to 17", then the correct profile can be had for much easier on your pockets.
rims are looking good.
But wtf is up with that wing?!
That car was looking pretty nice.. until you got wing....

I've been told theres some sensor in the transmission that detects it. Also what is the stock 14 inch tyres for 2nd gen? cuz the ones i had on my car were 185/60/R14 and going to 215/60/R16 was 15% out, but if its really 185/75/R14 than that would explain why i think its not out as much as i thought it would be.<--- just checked my old tires and they are 185/75  . I can live with only 5% out.
Yeh for now i'll just compensate the speed, wont take long to adjust.
Going 17's wouldn't save me money it'd cost me alot more!
Thanks bain, yeh i know the wing is very, ummm... different for a 2nd gen, but that's what i wanted. I love this wing and i wanted to be different. And yes my wing is slightly darker, but when i clear coat it properly i'm hoping it'll lighten up alot more.
I like how the front looks slightly lower now.
Yeh i got lazy with the pics, i'll crop and resize them for you guys:

yea its definately 185/75-14 as our stock tyre dimension
the reason some people might say going to 17's is cheaper is because alot of cars are coming with 17" standard, and alot of people are upgrading to 17"s these days and the wheels and tyres especially are alot cheaper nowdays. especially the 235/45/17 range in 17's.. fords/holdens/mitsus they use that dimension.
:)
Thanks bain, yeh i know the wing is very, ummm... different for a 2nd gen, but that's what i wanted.
Different is one way to put it :)
Whatever floats your boat (as the saying goes)

i think i mihgt just buy 20's :P lol nah i think 17's are what i will get as they r considerably chepaer than 18's and 18's cost **** loads as well not only for rubber but also for the actual rims
