Car was rolling in neutral at a slow walking pace... decided to test the handbrake & pulled it up gradually.

Mucho surprised that it grabbed hard with loud "KLUNK"!!!

Is this "normal" on other 3rd gens?

Christ, now that's a pain... no more drifting & handbrake turns! :doubt:

Damned!
Whenever I park on a slope I usually release the handbrake & roll a little
before refilling the meter... sounds like this might be BAD for a 3rd gen.

No other car (2nd & 1st gen, Sigma, all Toyotas/Fords/Holdens I've tried etc etc) do it,
must be something to do with that weird disc & drum rear brake arrangement.

I doubt thats normal at all. Thats what mine was doing so I took it to mitsubishi and they put the revised break shoes on or something. That cleared it up.
If your cars still under warranty, take it to your nearest dealer.

New brake shoes for drums could have a sharp edge on the ends which grab.
One could usually chamfer off the sharp edge with a file or it'll fix itself after driving a
few miles anyway, but that probably don't happen with handbrake shoes.

Cool, ta!

Yeah its 34mths old... need to find some time to arrange an
RACV pre-Warranty-expiry check then book it in with a dealer
to get everything fixed before April.

I have a KE and a KJ2 that dont do it at all but i also have a KH that does make that clunk noise.
The hand brake in the KH that makes that clunk noise works so much better than the KE or KJ2 that dont make the noise. When it cluncks it grabs straight away nearly locking up the rears. With the KE and KJ2 without the clunk, you have to yank the handbrake so much harder to get them to work properley.

I would much rather the clunk noise knowing it works so much better.

Yeah the handbrake works really well, just that when I hear the CLUNK noise it does it sound annoying, and scary, quite the opposite to my 2nd gen. Makes me think its going to break.

However it only makes the CLUNK noise whilst I am still moving (fast or slow, as long as the wheels are still rotating).
