4 or 5 times in last 6 months, 3rd has failed to engage, locking tbar in second for a few seconds then into drive & it shifts okusually after spirited acceleration, today it was going up hill in 60k traffick.
Any ideas on the problem ?
Starting to worry as i have a trip to canberra planned, for the easter weekend to visit my son. It would be a tad inconvenient to drive home in second, or getting it fast ernough to go for overdrive.
Look forward to any advice. Fluid level is slightly over filled in the dip stick.

Cheers, Damien.

you gotta make sure you check the auto dipstick while the car is running, in park on a flat surface... the level of fluid in the automatic is important... also the type of fluid... if it's red - it's probably dextron. apparently these gearboxes like their own gearoil (the mitsu genuine one) but you can get away with dextron.

I have the exact same problem with my 2nd gen, exact same symptoms.

i put OD off and that usually makes it kick back into 3rd, then click od back on.

gettin a tranny service soon, hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Sounds like an auto service is a good idea.

You shouldn't need to top up ATF... there's no way it gets consumed in service.
If you're losing ATF it means its leaking from a seal somewhere.

Most ATFs are red... :doubt:

Mitsubishi specify their own type of ATF, it is not compatible with what GM/Ford use.
But Hyundais use the same type as Mitsubishi so its not hard to find.

Castrol TQM-ST Auto Fluid, for Hyundai, Mitsubishi & Proton.

Rang my Mechanic, he thinks it may be a Solenoild intermittant, or dirt sticking a valve open occasionally.
Booked in Friday morn for a look.

Regarding the level dipping, Dandenong Mitsubishi Parts Dept told me to check trans on lever surface engine off 15mins after shutdown hot motor. Is this correct or not ?

Cheers Damien.

True... before i got my transmission reconditioned, i had it serviced - and they filled with with the Mistu ATF... it was more yellowish than red...

damn i love manual

try draining the fluid and putting some new stuff in. if that dosen't help, take it to an auto trans mechanic to have a look at. piece of mind...

what does it mean when your fluid is red down the bottom and clear up the top? The gbox still feels fine in mine, when i took teh driveshafts out I had to put in over a litre back, i don't think i've ever had a full red dipstick. Any ideas? Does not smell burnt as per manual and no metal bits present :p

Thanks guys, i'll let the mech look at it friday. Stuck with auto broken spine prevents workin on cars or driving manuals these days. Hopefully a service will fix it.
Cheers,
Damien.

The TP Switch (Throttle Position Switch) was replaced.
It's a different car to drive, the switch was obviously on the way out when i bought the car last march.
Not sure on cost, $120 - $140 get bill at end of month.

Any further comment on previous posts, wouldn't achieve anything. So there wont be any from me.
Cheers, Damien.
