Yeah, these are one of the more expensive items to change. A competent mechanic can change a timing belt & you dont have to do it at the dealers.
Some figures: Bro's Honda Civic & my mazda mx-5 - $350 & $280 around sept last year.
digressing: The mx-5 has a non-interfering engine so no damage if the timing belt goes. Does anyone know if this is the case with magnas?

i got my timing belt done about 1 year ago by Midas cannington cost me $220 to get it done which was by far the best quote i got, next closest was like $350 so it pays to ring around first.
I believe if a timing belt goes on the magna then it will do a lot of damage

what? 350?
i get quotes of up to $700 for my timing chain for the 2nd gen.
are the chains harder to remove than ur belts?
do you need to remove the head or anything to replace the timing belt?
if not thats probably why its so cheap in comparison..

I got a quote of $300 from Shell Autoserv.
Make sure you get it done. If it goes, so does your engine.
mine cost me $300 from ultratune a year ago

When i had my gen 2 and timing chain done, $1200. That was for replacement of chain and new oil pump. apparently its recomended to do the oil pump with timing chain. I think i got my a/c and alternator belts done with that too.

I paid for just the belt $120 from Mitsubishi not-installed.
Ill be putting it in myself soon, so i am already saving a lot of cash. But the job is pretty big too, even though ive already replaced the water pump which is in the same place so its gonna be easy.
Tom
I got mine chucked in for free...when the bloke from the mitsu came to my house to install the water pump which cost $300 inc labour.
I got mine done TE 3L inc service $480 end of last year, had other quotes for the same work as high as $600

Any decent reputable mechanic that will guarantee their work. Ring around go with the cheapest that wil guarante it. Just avoid Mitsubishi dealerships, they are generally much more expensive!!
Who does your pink slip inspections? Ask them.

Hi Guys,
Just thought I would share this with you all, I have only had my 99 Verada for 2 months and my mates all laughed and said your wasting your money doing the timing belt (135 000k's with no record of it being done). Well one of the guys at works wifes lost the belt on her car last month, and last week one of our clients daughters did in the belt on her car (with approx 68000k's on the clock), thats two in as many months.
Both ended in expensive damge to the engines, now my mates are like you are so lucky you did it cause with your luck your car would be next........
And the funny thing is before I got the Verada I had never meet anyone who had lost their timing belt.

I had my swift GTi down at summernats in 2002, had probably done more then 20 dyno runs leading up to the nats and down there. had the car at 9400rpm on most runs getting the tune perfect
The timing belt let go a week later when i started the car at a servo! No major damage, that is my luckiest breakdown story.
I don't risk it now. Just got my Verada one done last service.

So I had better stick with the log book recommendation of getting my TJ timing belt changed at 75K kms. Should I do any other service at the same time? Replace all spark plugs (esp the rear bank ones?)

Belt should be every 5Y or 100,000 kms.
Rear plugs every 90,000 kms.
